Meryl has only been once, but it was enough to give her a pretty good picture of the environment that Millie grew up in. Loud, full, always a lot of children running around. Plenty of aunts and uncles for advice, a warm, soft spoken mother and father. Food was always scarce with so many mouths to feed—though Millie never said as much explicitly, Meryl knows how to read between the lines—but they found a way to scrape by. Always have. Three and a half years ago, they insisted that Meryl stay for dinner, and she spent the night curled up in Millie’s childhood bedroom with a full stomach and a warm heart.
Today, the house Millie grew up in is empty and cold, holes taken out of the walls, the windows shattered. When Millie approaches, key in hand, she doesn’t end up having to unlock the door; it swings open, as if to beckon her inside… or as if to indicate that the building itself is stagnating in the absence of its keepers.

Wolfwood's so surprised by the joke he snorts when he laughs, immediately covering his mouth only to catch the dude grinning at him. He gestures to the seat Wolfwood just hung his coat on.
"Hey, you look lonely," he says. "Want to talk?"

The shooting star and the hallucination of Saint Vash, his lovely eyes brighter than noon. Wolfwood shoved himself up to sitting and dropped his hands.
Saint Vash sat next to the bed, morning light curling pink around his hair. It looked a trace more regal in the light, more a crown and less cacti sharpness. He smiled.
Wolfwood flopped back onto the bed and covered his eyes again. “Okay, try again,” he muttered to himself. “Ya didn’t wake up all the way.”
“I will be here no matter how many times you try to blink me away,” Saint Vash said.

Summary
Plants are creatures created by humanity to do their biddings. Vash, a Working Independent(rare in its availability), is finally being sold off again. In order to avoid being killed, he plays the part of the obedient Plant, whilst secretly yearning to be free. On the hunt for food, Wolfwood, a travelling priest who disapproves of the use of Working Plants, purchases Vash on a whim.
Despite his apprehension and feeling of defiance towards his God, Wolfwood takes it upon himself to teach Vash how to assimilate into human society, despite Vash's stubbornness and reluctance to change.
As they navigate their complicated dynamic, Vash and Wolfwood also confront the looming threat of a rogue Plant said to be attacking Working Plant owners in search of his brother, stopping at nothing to reunite with his lost half. Meryl, Milly, and Roberto are investigating the Plant's attacks, blissfully unaware that things are about to start hitting a little too close to home, thanks to a certain priest's inability to let things be.
