“Fire Lord Zuko,” the guard says, gasping for breath between words. Zuko nods twice. “We’ve gotten reports that our food storage in the woods — the large one — was burned by disputants. Nearby guards had asked to call for you immediately.”
Zuko sways. Of course something like this would happen as soon as he tries to take a break. The guard notices his hesitation and speaks again.
“We think the attacker might be Princess Azula, My Lord.”

Zuko joins Team Avatar at the Western Air Temple, hoping to restore his honor by choosing a new path. What he doesn’t expect is the way Katara’s scent hits him like lightning.
Katara has been suppressing her heat since she presented as an Omega, but after the Day of Black Sun, her supply ran out and fate is no longer something she can outrun.
The legends speak of two souls, scattered across time and nations, drawn together by the balance of the world.
The Water Tribe calls them Fatebound.
The Fire Nation names them Agni’s Chosen.
Zuko doesn’t believe in fate. He doesn’t believe in soulbonds or destiny.
Katara always believed in stories.
She’s the ocean. He’s full of fire.
They’re not supposed to fit.
But something ancient is waking.
The bond is forming.
The heat is coming.

The Fire Nation descends into chaos at the sudden loss of firebending, & the war becomes bloodier still, as the troops fight on out of sheer desperation, terrified that a reckoning is now due.

It had taken him years upon years to learn the lesson – all the important ones always did take Zuko too long to grasp – but he had finally learned to understand when he was unwanted, unneeded. So he left.
He had thought his destiny was intertwined with the Avatar's and the spirits had laughed at his foolishness. It was up to him to discover his own path, in the end.Or: Zuko left after saving Aang and his friends from Combustion Man because he knew he wasn't really wanted and sets off on his own to discover how to help the world recover from a century of war. He did not really intend to become a spirit-figure along the way.

Summary
Out of everything Zuko couldn’t change about his life, he was glad he at least had the ability to make a difference in the lives of others.
He didn’t consider it crime fighting or being a hero. In truth, he tried to avoid putting a real label on it at all. He simply wore a mask, put on a dark suit, and he went around at night making sure people weren’t getting taken advantage of.
Or something like that.The Blue Spirit comes across a guy getting abducted, but before he can do anything about it, the guy... rescues himself?

Summary
Zuko does what he’s always done; he keeps going. There isn’t much of a choice for someone who was lucky to be born — you really can’t do anything unless you’re prepared to do it against the odds. He’d gotten used fairly quickly. Even so, it was getting harder by the day to keep going. He’d always thought that sometime, in the end, it would pay off. There would come a time after the fight, grueling work rewarded by rest and recognition. An end, or at least a respite, or an upturn of some sort. He still clung desperately to that idea. Losing sight of it felt like death.
Or: An alternative timeline of events in which some things are just slightly different, the timing is slightly off, and in turn the characters make vastly different choices. The story diverges from canon halfway through season 2 and Zuko joins the Gaang early under different and far less heroic circumstances. Heed the tags and warnings.
