It had been difficult to explain to the doctor in Chicago why Rand’s back looked like he’d been run over by a tractor and spit back out.
It had fully healed by the time they’d went to the office so the three men had no choice but to back up some excuse about Rand getting into a car crash a couple years back, and definitely didn’t include any mention of a possessed bug person slashing through his spine like it was scissors to paper.

The first time Rolan brings it up is on an autumn night in senior year. They’re on the verge of greening out, so high things don’t feel real, laying on the floor of Rand’s parents’ attic.
“Y’know, I wish you were a girl.”
It breaks the silence like the tolling of a bell. The clock ticks over to three in the morning.
“Whaddya mean?” Rand asks.
“It’d be easier. Easier than living… living like this.”
Rolan doesn’t elaborate any further.

Unlike most, this funeral didn’t have a body to bury. There were no bones to be set to rest underneath the earth, so it didn’t really matter if the tombstone was sinking or not. The corpse of the deceased was already long gone, buried years before. Though it had been recently unearthed by a storm, there was nothing more that the swamps of Galloway could do to disturb the resting place of the child that died cold and alone on that autumn night in 1968. Nothing more to worry about.
…That, however, didn’t stop the person whose name was displayed on the stone from worrying.

He had to be fine. They had to be fine, and stable, and capable of doing the things that Rand and Rolan shouldn’t or couldn’t do, she had to be able to help and support them and he couldn’t fucking do that if he just became a burden on them instead. He was already one in too many ways, not working and basically just freeloading off of Rolan and taking advantage of Rand’s vulnerable state to get some of the affection and closeness that she so fucking desperately craved.
And now they were having to go to LA to get Kian’s things, which was making Rand stressed because they’d had to leave Barc with one of Rolan’s friends so the dog wouldn’t have to spend hours in the car with them, which was yet another way that Kian was just making their lives worse. More difficult. He tried so fucking hard to do enough for them to outweigh all the ways she was making things worse, but it never felt like enough. It never was enough.

He’d never been able to really do anything for himself. He could only watch as his own life fell apart around him, as his parents slowly grew to resent him for being such a failure, as his friends left him behind to achieve something better and greater, as the world around him changed and grew and improved and he always stayed the same. He could just watch from the sidelines.
It didn’t change now, as he could only watch Rolan slowly lean over Kian’s body, flipping it over to the side for easier access to the tear that neatly sliced it in half. He could do nothing but watch as Rolan took a slow, careful whiff of the body, and then, in a split second, plunged his face straight into the creature.

kian can't hide the hitch in his breath when rolan's scythe arm neatly slices her borrowed shirt directly down the middle. their heart beats wildly in her chest, and he suspects rolan can hear it.
"you're gonna sit there and watch us, okay?" rand is partway through removing his own clothes, shaky hands struggling a little with his belt. they don't draw attention to it. instead, kian focuses on the soft plush of his belly, the thick hair that covers his chest and stomach, and thinks about how she wants to sink her teeth into his flesh.
he doesn't. Instead, they sit where rolan directs her.
"sitting and looking pretty shouldn't be too hard for you, right?" rolan teases, pulling her ruined shirt off her shoulders.
