Summary
When the time comes for the Kerberos mission, Admiral Sanda refuses to let Shiro pilot, due to his illness. Meanwhile, Hunk comes on the mission as an engineer. Unfortunately, he, Sam and Matt Holt, and their pilot are still taken by the Galra.
Lance nearly falls apart, both from the loss of his fiancé and mounting evidence that the Garrison’s covering something up. He washes out of the Garrison, but Shiro and Keith insist on looking out for him. Katie Holt sneaks into the Garrison as “Pidge Gunderson,” but she’s quickly found out…… by Shiro, Keith, and Iverson, the last of whom agrees to look the other way, as long as Shiro and Keith keep an eye on her. Lance drags Shiro’s brother Ryou out into the canyons, hunting for the source of a mysterious energy that seems to be calling to Lance, and Keith just wants this ragtag group of weirdos he’s fond of to please stay together.
Then, an escape pod crashes in the desert near the Garrison. Retrieving Hunk leads these exceptional young people into space — but once they get to Arus, two of the Lions end up choosing different pilots.

Football had been his dad’s dream for him, especially when Shiro ended up going to the same high school as his father. After school, he’d get in his hand-me-down Honda and drive forty five minutes, don a bright teal and white t-shirt and blindingly white shoes and become someone who would be unrecognizable to anyone who knew him at school. He’d become cheerleader Shiro, the Shiro who could do a layout-stepout-double and toss a flyer twenty feet into the air. It wasn’t that he was ashamed of that part of his life, just that he knew his teammates would use it as a way to undermine his football accomplishments, even though he left cheer even more tired than a football game.
So, he kept the two sides of himself completely separate from one another, kept his two things in their own corners. It worked, and he was happy. Until Matt Holt shows up and threatens to tear down the carefully crafted separation between high school and all star cheer, that is.
