“Ranboo,” Techno interrupted. Not particularly gently, either, bringing Ranboo’s rambling to a halt because, well—they were here. Unchanged. Ranboo was talking himself into a panic where there need be none. “Are you askin’ me how I knew I was a dude?"
Ranboo felt the shame shiver over him, cowering beneath that feeling of being in the spotlight, a thousand judging eyes on him, waiting, expecting. It was such a loaded question, and such a simple one despite that, and still Ranboo couldn’t bring it past his lips because it felt wrong. He’d set the words aside in his head, lined them all up in one neat little row, but even now, after hyping himself up to take that first step, he felt frozen in his tracks, rooted to the ground by his feet, unable to turn around and run despite wanting nothing more than that. Techno was looking more intently, now. Silent, because he knew a struggle with words when he saw it and knew Ranboo needed time, but firm in his expression, I’m here, you know I’m here, take your time, we’ve got all day.
Lip wobbling, Ranboo got himself to nod.

Techno watches as Tommy storms across the room, boots crushing an apple without remorse, a sickening crunch ringing to Techno’s sensitive ears. He can only watch as Tommy fumes, a repetitive tune to them both. Nothing changes between them it seems. Techno says the wrong things, moves the wrong way, and Tommy backs up like a cornered animal. Sometimes he responds in an appeasing way that resembles nothing like the boy Techno saw grow up. Often, he responds in anger, in violence.
Techno stays in that exact spot, even hours after Tommy has left.

"Quit shouting and I'll put you to sleep, you won't feel a thing." The offer was almost tempting. Mercy, in a twisted sort of way. He was being granted a painless death.
But to die like that was horrifying. To be sent to sleep, with the knowledge that you would never awake, it wasn't worth it. So, instead, he mustered up all the strength he could, and he spat with venom in his voice.

“I’m sorry,” Techno said. Ranboo didn’t believe him. And—And not in the sense that he thought Techno wasn’t aware that it had scared Ranboo, seeing him flee like that, but—Ranboo was almost sure that he’d have done it again, given the chance. He’d never seen Techno run from a situation like that, avoiding confrontation by leaving. Techno looked things in the eye and made them leave him alone, not the other way around.
And yet, he’d run from Ranboo, from the confrontation with his actions. Good actions, too, nothing he’d need to justify himself for.
Ranboo didn’t think he was sorry. He didn’t have to be. There was something larger there, beneath his shivering surface.
“It’s just… It’s hard,” Techno said. And then, quieter, almost as if to himself: “It’s harder with you.”
And—all of a sudden, Ranboo felt seen, like they’d pulled back the veil, blown away the fog. An ugly truth, unearthed, roots and bugs and all. Ranboo was so glad to hear it.
“And I don’t know if that’s, like, a sign or anythin’, if it says anythin’ about us—”
"I've been thinking about that too."

Tommy was loved and cared for. He had support constantly and he adored his older brothers and his dad.

But things didn’t remain perfect.
Perhaps Tommy should never have let his guard down.
When one family member left, everything changed.
Fights became common and yells often sounded around the house, only ended by the slam of a door or two.
Tommy really had thought that he found a family that was happy and wanted him.
But, every day was proving him wrong.

When Wilbur gave up on college and came home early only a month after leaving, Tommy's family seemed to break. Technoblade remained at his college overseas. The house was always loud but Tommy had never felt so alone before. It was only a matter of time until he broke.

There’d been some more conversations lately, deeply uncomfortable ones that fleshed out the extent of his and Techno’s boundaries, the expanse of their feelings about what had happened. Ranboo’d been right; he continued to feel it, processing a little more each day, finding himself overcome with lingering emotion whenever he sat still and unthinking. He just—he wanted to be able to trust that his voice was heard when he used it, and that his needs and boundaries were respected, especially when it had taken him so long to learn how to articulate them, and he wanted Techno and Phil to be the select few people he was never afraid to be weak around, and for a short, terrifying while, Techno had taken that from him.
Now, Ranboo had asked for a minute, and Techno was ready to give him all day, what do you need, what is it, what can I do, what’s bothering you?

“What?” Techno is instantly torn out of his thoughts. He barely heard the boy's tiny voice in the midst of his deafening thoughts.
The kid shifts uncomfortably, averting his gaze completely from Techno. “ ‘m Tommy.”
Techno swallows the nerves, and nods. “Hullo, Tommy.” He’s stiff, uncertain. His relief from earlier gets ripped out of him, his lungs shrinking, all the air getting shoved out of them like a punch in the gut. He didn’t want to know the kids name, he thought it would be easier like that. Here he is, however, with the boy's name leaving his mouth, and his vulgar thoughts running a mile a minute.
