It's loop... 86, you think. Or, no, you touched a tear, and this is the space between loop 85 and 86.
There is an eye. You think, this symbolism is awfully heavy-handed. Around the eye is a shade you've never seen before. It's bright and vibrant and striking, and shines in such a way that is nearly blinding. You shield your own single eye.
It gets ever closer, bearing down on you like an expanding Sun, dying. "HEY, I SEE WE'RE BOTH IN A BIT OF A PICKLE. WANNA MAKE A DEAL?"
"what?" you manage to choke out of your strangled throat, finally.

...Siffrin knew that just because they couldn't see the stars didn't mean they weren't there. Whether hidden by the sun or man-made light, or on full display in the blackened sky, the stars were always with him, always watching from above.
The thought used to comfort Siffrin. Now it only strengthened the ache in their gut that flared every time they thought of what they'd lost.
Siffrin eyes started to burn with tears. He bit his lip, hard, hoping to distract from the pressure building in his head.
Isabeau, of course, noticed first. "Hey, Sif, you alright?"
"Oh, yeah," Siffrin said, hastily wiping his face. "Doing great!"
Isabeau raised an eyebrow. "Okay. You sure?"
Siffrin shook his head. "It's nothing. Just…" He smiled, sadly. "Just… stars."
Siffrin is fine. He has a family that loves him and plenty of adventures ahead. He's fine.
But he still wants to remember.
And he can read his language now. And he has an ache in his soul that won't go away.
So what if every memory leaves him choking on his own blood? So what if the Universe doesn't want him to remember?
He has to at least try.

Summary
You've always liked the slow downwards spiral of a good tragedy. There's a shock to an ending where everyone dies or goes insane, but it's an expected shock. If you know the signs, you can catch every single missed step, every sign that a character is drawing closer to the point of no return. The lover considering a blade; the maddened king catching sight of his enemy in the crowd; the jester missing a cue on their performance. Scripts are appealingly predictable if you understand them well enough. Nothing follows a pattern quite so faithfully as a tragedy does.
And when the curtain falls, it's satisfying to know that it's fallen on rock bottom. To know that's it, that's the worst it can get. No more corpses to be stacked up or lives to be ruined. You can walk out of the theater and thank the stars that the wreckage you just witnessed isn't real. Whatever else goes wrong in your life, the theater will always hold a story that's much worse than yours. It's comforting, in a weird way. Reassuring.
In the city of Corbeaux, Siffrin meets the man who will one day call himself King.

“There are stars!” And Isa sounds so, so excited to answer with that.
“So?”
This conversation tastes sugar-smoke familiar, but you can’t criticize it. The ache-urge in your chest colored that visceral shade you remember from the copper-caramel taste in your mouth always tries to get you to feel anger, rage, a surefire determination to fix what has gone forgotten, but that’s the shade that drove the King mad, and you don’t want to be some kind of ghost of him—it would be too easy. He reflects you, in your worst moments, but you aren’t allowed to carry glass anymore, so you aren’t allowed to carry him, either.
(Weeks after the end of everything, the party finds an abandoned observatory.)

Siffrin tried to open his mouth to reply, but found that it was locked shut. His tongue stuck to the roof of his mouth, and his teeth clenched so tightly Siffrin felt that they could crack. After a moment, he blinked confusedly. “What was the question again?”
Isa propped his head up with his hand. His eyebrows furrowed in what looked like worry. “Sif, I only just asked you the question. I know your memory isn’t great, but…”
Whoops. In an attempt to deflect, Siffrin laughed and waved his hand. “Sorry, Isa. You know me, my memory’s so bad I think I might forget to die!”
Siffrin’s attempt missed its target, and instead struck the local water tower.
“That isn’t good, Sif. Like, genuinely that’s a problem.” Isa’s free hand wavered towards Siffrin as he spoke, but before it got too close he pulled it away and instead brought it to his face. He rubbed his eyes for a moment, then looked at Siffrin in earnest. “We all know you tend to forget things, but if it’s this bad it could be a medical issue.”
Siffrin averted his gaze, and frowned discontentedly. “It’s not that big of a deal, Isa. I’m just tired. It’s late.”
