Originally posted on Tumblr, but I decided to change a few things and post it here. Basically, Johnny and Dally are ghosts, and these are just snippets of how they keep protecting their brothers from the afterlife. Really cute, kinda sad, a well-rounded meal.
"He was grateful he hadn't been whisked away to become some singing cherub above the clouds. He was grateful that he was still here, drifting between the houses and haunts of his friends—his brothers.
Johnny was sure that Dally had never been grateful for anything in his life, but he thought this might be the closest he'd ever get. It's not easy to watch the boys you've come to love fall apart with grief.
But they were still there. They were still able to do what little they could to alleviate the burden of their anguish. They could still help, and that's something they would never stop doing.
Johnny and Dally had never left, and they didn't plan on going anytime soon. They were still needed, after all. "

Summary
Ponyboy thought he was close with the gang but when Steve says something horrible to him, he starts to separate himself from them. However, he soon finds himself unable to stay gold as drugs, alcohol, crime, and a terrible influence enter his life.

More than anything, he finds he misses Ponyboy and wants to know more of the Ponyboy on the page. There were so many things Ponyboy didn't say out loud, so many thoughts of his on the page that makes Dallas want to turn his head to talk to him, yet he isn't there.
Dallas starts hunting for the past in the present. And starts to get obsessed with Ponyboy.

- For what feels like the twentieth time, Ponyboy reads over Johnny's letter in the coldness of the last day of what he knows is the worst year he's ever had in his life. All he's been doing, weeks on end, is eating, going to school, coming home, and re-reading this letter over and over and over again.
- The last time he'd read those words, he'd been in his bedroom, over a month ago. The box had been pulled from the attic, and he'd pulled the composition book out, curious about it. He hadn't realized what the words, written in marker on the front, had meant: DEC. 1965, P. M. Curtis.
- "Are you gonna come and visit us in January for Darry's birthday?" Sodapop's voice sounds so hopeful over the phone line that Ponyboy feels a little bit like an asshole knowing that he's just going to disappoint him again.
The past and future touch between Ponyboy Curtis, mourning Dallas Winston's death and decades later, Dallas is able to read the words back. A triptych.
