On days when they’re not too busy, Sokka will drag Zuko away to spar. They go to a courtyard that’s far away from everything else, they take off their bindings under their shirts, and they practice with their swords for a while. Sokka’s good, but Zuko’s better, and he almost always wins, but there are times when Sokka manages to sit astride Zuko’s chest, almost straddling his hip bones, and he’s sure that Zuko could push him off if he wanted to, but he always just freezes instead. And so Sokka cackles and grins and holds the tip of his sword a hair's breadth away from Zuko’s throat and waits for him to yield.
Some days, though, when Zuko spends the daylight hours training Aang and sparring with Toph, while Sokka goes hunting or fishing, they don’t see each other until dinner time. On those days, Sokka will make some hollow excuse and walk with Zuko to his room, and they’ll sit back to back and drink tea until one of them either starts to fall asleep or until one of the others comes knocking.

Zuko and his uncle, Iroh, left the Fire Nation. Zuko's father, Ozai, had always been abusive, but it became worse when he came out as trans. Well, more like outed by his younger sister, who never liked him, even deadnaming him after he came out. Zuko and Iroh move into Ba Sing Se, his uncle starting a tea shop and the two living on top.
One day at the first day Zuko had at the new school, he ended up joining a group of four crazy kids, two being siblings, one blind girl (who he knew beforehand), and a bald small child.
But, everyone has secrets and Zuko isn't immune to that, keeping his secrets close to his chest until they get pulled away with brutal force.

[ Mai sighs. “Here: Is it a texture thing or gender thing?” Beating around the bush is a help neither to her nor him. Plus, she recalls the rare instances of Zuko impulse-cutting strands of his hair after the feeling was too much on his neck (like brother, like sister she muses self-humorously). And she personally understands the feeling of how wrong a hairstyle can be.
Zuko’s hands relax and he looks back towards her. “A gender thing.” Mai nods. She stands and heads over to Zuko, softly putting strands of the subject at hand behind his ears and then placing her hands on his shoulders.
“Now, my dearly handsome boyfriend, care to elaborate on that?” Zuko's face scrunches up in a distinctly unhandsome way as reaction and she takes on a small, amused grin.
“Never compliment me like that again.”
“Deal. I sounded like the main character of a shitty romcom.” Neither mention how much she actually likes watching those. Especially the shitty ones. ]
