“It's my job,” Abigail finally says. “Where there’s money, there’s me.” She shrugs with a pitiful smile. Despite the somberness dulling her eyes and tweaking her lips downwards, John finds she still looks awful pretty.
“It don’t gotta be that way,” he says tentatively, finally thinking and saying. He keeps his gaze on her as though fearful if he looks away she’ll stray from him.
“I wish you wouldn’t say that.”
“Why?”
“Cause it makes me think you’re someone you’re not.”
“M’sorry,” he says for once.
She’s turned her bare knees in to knock against his. It makes John dizzy in a good way. Eventually, her head drops to his shoulder. It’s chaste and sweet for a moment, but they’ve never been particularly good at that.

Aspen snorted, looking over at the other briefly before dropping his head with yet another solemn shake.
“Nothing. I just don’t have an answer!” He laughed, feeling a little delusional in his words and behaviour but choosing to find some delight in it, lest he find more anguish and more heat in it instead.
“I’m being serious!” Savacir laughed, too, but it wasn’t the same sort. He placed both hands on his knees and leaned a little closer, dipping his head to try and catch Aspen’s gaze, laughing again when he shied back with a fright, startled by the abrupt proximity, “What do you have to inhibit? I know nothing about you. We have been friends for so long and I know nothing.”
“You never ask.” Aspen pushed himself up a little straighter, an uneven smile pulling tentatively at the corners of his lips, “Besides, I told you, I have nothing to inhibit.”
“I don’t believe that.”
