Over the past few days, Ed has been keeping himself at a distance. Stede doesn’t blame him: he’s been distant too. Doesn’t stop Stede from missing him, though. Stede’s been a bad boyfriend, he thinks. In the summertime he was able to take Ed out on day trips, shower him with little gifts, take him dancing without a care in the world. Now that ice is growing thicker and thicker on their doorstep, he feels like it’s grown between him and Ed as well. Nothing seems to melt it.

On the porch is possibly the biggest man Astarion has ever seen. His sun-kissed skin is browned and freckly, and his arms and chest are broad with muscle. There is a sizable scar on his face and there is also a large vine-like red tattoo that extends from his hairline to his well-defined jaw. He is wearing a simple t-shirt and trousers, and his soft brown hair is pulled into a half up-do– a suitable ensemble for doing manual labor, or other physical work.
He grins down at Astarion, warm and friendly.
Astarion is immediately suspicious. Nobody smiles at him like that unless they want something from him. (Okay, okay. Maybe those are the trust issues talking. He can hear his friends’ and therapist’s voices ringing in his head, reminding him that there are, in fact, good people in the world.)
So he makes himself wear a polite smile. “Can I help you?”

The big elf laughs. “Hardly ever. Yet somehow I manage to charm people on occasion. I’m Halsin.” He extends his hand.

“Astarion,” Halsin repeats slowly, as if memorizing the feel of every syllable on his tongue.
