Some little scene sketches from early in Marty and Rust's partnership, and parts of the 1995 investigation. Not in chronological order.
In Louisiana Rust creates his own structure. His work is necessary and not overtly cruel to the larger human organism of which he is a part. He is entitled to the things that allow him to do the work: mattress, cigarettes, books, shoes.
He is not entitled to Marty but has ended up with him anyway. This will backfire.

There's a grave, Cecil had said. Not that any of you would want to visit, he’d added. What he didn’t say is that he knew it was there because he’d stood in front of it, crouched down, his fingers ghosting against the name ensconced in history.
You can’t do a job like Cecil’s and not hate yourself to some degree.

Hours turned into days, days turned into weeks and weeks into months. He stopped counting them after the first hundred.
Sometimes there were sirens far in the distance, other times rain and thunder. Never voices. Nobody dared to come near this building anymore.
His thoughts got louder, more insistent - a garbled cacophony he eventually gave up on trying to decipher. Now they lurked in the shadows, judging him, just barely out of his field of view.
At first he had been furious. At what? The world? Henry? Michael? Himself?

The possibility of not recruiting Neil at all is never discussed.
It brings up a lot of questions, the protagonist thinks later that night, staring up at the ceiling. He will recruit Neil because he knows who Neil will become. It’s a stunted paradoxical little loop. How did it start?
The protagonist knows how it will end.
Unless…unless he walks away. Lying in the dark, wide awake, the protagonist is tempted.
(Can we change things, if we do it differently?)
But…
“What’s happened, happened,” the protagonist reminds himself.
Besides (selfish, selfish). He wants to see Neil again.Somewhere in between the end and the beginning, Neil and the protagonist manage to find a little time.
