When he was adrift on the ocean or starving in the desert or sweeping the floors of a dank tea shop in the slums of Ba Sing Se. When his face was burned by the same hand that used to gently stroke his head, and he was banished from his homeland at thirteen. But after many agonizing years, he learned how to be happy. He let his friends show him the way. At first, the emotion felt almost foreign, and it startled him. He had been living in fear and anger for so long that he knew no other way to be. But slowly, gently, the light filled him up, seeping into his bones and allowing him to become the ruler his uncle always knew he could be— one who ruled with decisive strength and steadfast compassion.

General Iroh, the Dragon of the West, Crown Prince of the Fire Nation, never lost his heir during the siege of Ba Sing Se. Lu Ten, at the age of 18, survives and wants to make a name for himself. He heads to the South Pole, commanding the Southern Raiders to occupy and colonize a small coastal village where he runs into a young waterbending girl, Katara.
As Zuko grows, he learns what it means to love a waterbending girl that is irretrievably tied to another.
As Katara grows, she learns what it means to stay true to your roots and to be loyal to those you meet along the way.
As Lu Ten grows, he struggles with protecting his legacy and his ascension to the throne.
But oddly, as he held her hand, through the haze of intoxication, he also felt grateful for this girl that had sacrificed everything for him. Just as he had sacrificed everything for her.
It was prosaic in the way of plays and poems.
He slipped the ring on her thumb. It was a man’s ring and it wouldn’t have fit anywhere else but there.

Summary
It's been five years since the end of the Hundred Year War, and Fire Lord Zuko is desperately trying to restore relations with the other nations while simultaneously attempting to build back the Fire Nation in a post-conflict world. In the midst of this responsibility, the firebender's yearning to locate and bring his mother home has slowly eaten away at his sanity.
Spurred by anguish and longing, Zuko comes to a bitter agreement with his imprisoned father, the nation's most notorious war criminal - a chance for temporary freedom in exchange for information on his mother's whereabouts. As a precaution, Zuko does not plan to travel the world with his father alone - he attempts to recruit the Avatar's waterbending master, Katara, to join him on this secret and downright impossible search, as his wife assumes temporary rule in his stead. It's two against one. Nothing could go wrong, could it?
Toggling between the perspectives of all three characters, this journey captures the grit, desperation, nuance, and bubbling desire of truly different but equally broken individuals.
