Summary
If Wylan Van Eck could be anyone for a day. it would be Jesper. Infuriating, irresponsible, disrespectful and arrogant Jesper. Because for as small and insensitive as he is, he doesn’t seem to care. And because maybe then he’d know what it’s like to feel like you belong. Or, at the very least, he’d know what it feels like to be likable.
All Jesper Fahey can think about is how Wylan would be a much better son than him. As much as he can’t stand his clear arrogance and his privilege due to class differences severely pisses him off, he’s doubted Wylan has ever been as much of a disappointment as he is. His Da deserves better. After all, why would anyone want someone as stupid, and disorganized as much as a let down as him?
When two boys in rival bands cross paths for the first time, it’s everything short of perfect. However, when each finds something magnetic, and enticing about the other, it’s hard to not grow closer. And, in the end, the pair might need each other more than they even realize.
(Also wanted to let everyone know I am still alive and active!! Chapter updates will be less frequent due to business in school and needing to be focusing on my mental health but fic is not abandoned :)) )

Summary
They’re kind of in the thick of the shit when the truth of Wylan’s identity comes out. No one really asks any questions, just takes the information at face value and moves along.
One of Wylan’s first nights in the barrel, a street merchant had laughed at Wylan as he stopped to offer a girl with messy hair and dirt smeared across her face half of the loaf of bread he’d just purchased. As he’d stooped down to offer it to her and check her over for injuries, her twin brother had bustled behind him, looting the rest of the measly krudge from Wylan’s pocket. When he’d crossed the street to the merchant to buy some fruit the merchant had chuffed he didn't have any krudge to offer. Wylan frantically searched his pocket only to come up empty handed.
“You gotta assume the worst about everyone in the barrel kid. ‘Cause you gotta be at your worst to end up in the dirty barrel.” The merchant offered him a dropped and bruised apple and sent him to scurry off. The kids have taken the money he’d been carrying to pay for his boarding for the week.
Or, the five times the crows are mean to Wylan after finding out his true identity, and the one time they try to make it up to him.

Wylan sucks in a breath, steeling himself and getting his order right in his head before opening the door. The sound of the door must have gotten Jesper’s attention, because he looks up from the machine behind the counter and waves.
“Wylan! Hey, you're back,” he says, grinning at Wylan as if he truly is happy to see him. “Nina, look–” he taps her on the shoulder as Wylan walks over.
Nina, who has just finished serving a customer, swats Jesper’s hand away lightly. “Yes, yes, I see him,” she says with an exasperated eyeroll, making eye contact with Wylan afterwards. She smiles at him. “Hey Wylan, what took you so long– I was stuck with only Jesper for conversation for like four days– it takes its toll on a person.”
Wylan, laughing at Jesper’s feigned offence, responds. “I’m sure he’s lovely company to have.”

Everything is over and nothing is normal.
Wylan should be delighted. He can live a comfortable life now, no longer afraid of his father. He can bring his mother home. He can spend the rest of his life making payments on that steep fee of Jesper's. (He hopes he can spend the rest of his life making payments on that steep fee of Jesper's.)
Instead the return to Geldstraat brings new challenges. It's not Kaz or Jan calling the shots anymore, it's Wylan, and he'll need to decide if he's equal to the challenge of managing his father's empire, caring for the remains of his family, and becoming one of the few good men in Ketterdam.

“If you get out there while you’re drugged there’s no telling what you’ll do,” Wylan said, pushing past Kaz to get back to his work station. “I’d think you'd want to avoid pulling the Dregs into this gang war.” He yanked a cabinet open and rummaged around for a pipette. Opened the vial. Drew out a drop. In his head he ran through the motions of the synthesis: he’d gotten close, before, with the blood sample. All he had to do now was see it through to the finish.
“I know that.” Kaz’s voice was nearly a snarl, but then again it always sounded like that. There was still time. “I mean, why didn’t you lock it from the outside?”
“Like that would stop you," Wylan scoffed. "You need an antidote. You said the others were dead within the hour.”
“Only after killing everyone in their vicinity, Merchling, did you forget that part?”
