Summary
It hits him then, like a wave breaking on sand, loud as thunder when it crashes, then trickling away into little rivulets flowing back home, murmuring one word over and over and over.

The problem is, Stede doesn’t recall ever having met anyone named Ed.
Stede Bonnet goes home to his family, and within days of his return, starts a brawl with Mary’s new paramour. An unlucky twist of fate leaves him with a head injury that wipes the last months of his life clean. Unable to remember leaving his family in the first place, exiled by his wife for sins he doesn’t remember committing, Stede has absolutely nothing to his name. He takes to the sea, following his lifelong dream and a tiny scrap of red silk that washes up on the beach, but he doesn’t make it far before he’s captured by the dread pirate Blackbeard himself, who seems to hold the missing piece of the puzzle that Stede’s life has become.

“I would protest spoiling it, but I think it's rather obvious, isn't it?” Stede says. His nose wrinkles as he smiles. “The tension is certainly there from the beginning. It just takes them a while to get there.”
“Good. Would have been a shit story otherwise."
Former local grunge legend Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard of Blackbeard & the Krakens, has fallen on hard times. Following slanderous accusations from ex-bandmate (and ex-lover) Calico Jack, Ed is blacklisted from all his usual venues. His career is over, and, so far as he’s concerned, so is his life. He spends his days wallowing in a dingy Seattle apartment, fighting with his manager and bemoaning his loss of purpose.
Enter one Stede Bonnet, Ed’s obnoxiously loud next-door-neighbor. Stede Bonnet is an overly enthusiastic playwright who cares way too much about Shakespeare and writes like a dandy from the 18th century.
He’s the most interesting thing to happen to Ed in years.

And then it's Ed who pulls back, tilting his head in what looks like…confusion?
“Wait,” he says, with an eyebrow raised. “What do you mean, a tattoo because of you?”
Stede pulls back, too.
He is equally confused.
Ed squints at him.
“You said ‘a tattoo',” Ed reiterates, inexplicably emphasising the ‘a’. “I mean. I understand why this one might get a bigger reaction, or whatever. I get it's maybe more meaningful than the others. But–”
“Hang on,” Stede interjects, his brain snagging on ‘this one’. On ‘the others’.
The others?
What does that mean?

Stede draws his attention back to the head massage, alternating pressure from the kind of bruising that’s enough to knead a migraine away, to gentle, delicate strokes through his hair. He grows almost meditative with it, forcing his eyes away from Ed’s face and simply enjoying the feeling of body heat and cool, damp-silk hair against his palms. Truthfully, he could do this for hours, rather than the usual three-to-five minutes that’s usually afforded to customers when they…
When…
It’s been longer than three-to-five minutes.
A quick glance at the clock reveals it’s been far, far longer than three-to-five minutes.
Stede doesn’t mind, obviously. And Ed doesn’t seem to be about to question it. But the snide little Lucius-like voice in the back of his mind points out that almost twenty fucking minutes is maybe a bit of an overkill.
Stede yanks his hands away from Ed’s hair like it’s covered in bleach.
“Okey-doke!” Stede manages, voice shrill and a little strangled.
From across the salon, the real Lucius snorts.

Ed’s starting to feel more and more like a member of the string quartet playing out the sinking of the fucking Titanic.
