It was late, just past eleven, by the time Cyno returned home.
He always hated staying at work late, especially on Fridays. But he worked in a funeral home as an Undertaker, so his work was never done. While he was thankful that he would always have a job to support the two people he loved the most in the world, it still made his heart ache to send Tighnari and Collei a text in their family group chat saying that he was going to be home late. Again.
(Cyno works extremely long hours in his job as an Undertaker, but he finally gets a weekend off to spend with his two favorite people, and he's going to enjoy every second of it.)

Summary
Cordyceps, a parasitic fungus, has ravaged Sumeru for the past 15 years. Scientist Tighnari has found a potential cure: his daughter Collei is immune. But when it's revealed Tighnari has been stealing medicine from the Akademiya to treat Collei's Eleazar, his findings fall on deaf ears and he and Collei are forced to flee.
Cyno has spent his life serving as a matra, defending humanity against the infected. Trained to kill on sight, he can't do so when the order for Tighnari's execution comes. Because after years of losing comrades to Cordyceps, Collei is the hope he never dared to have.

Cyno never treated Tighnari with anything other than tenderness and consideration, completely at odds with Collei's preconceived notions of him, and it was just...bewildering.
And even still, Collei just couldn't bring herself to trust him fully. Trusting got you separated from your parents. Trusting got you tortured and experimented on. Trusting could put you in the ground.
Therefore, she remained wary and distant, avoiding eye contact with Cyno most of the time and certainly never getting close enough for him to touch her.
She would never let him touch her again.

Even if you just want company.” On any other day, one where Xiao was not desperate for just the smallest drop of blood, he would have appreciated the offer of kindness. Now, all it does is pull at his still heart with a strange feeling of guilt. His instincts screech blood-blood-blood- drain and insist he tear Aether apart when all the newcomer wants to do is offer a helping hand.Or: Xiao, a Vampire with no safe access to food, is starving to death... and Aether is a little too kind for his own good.
