She drew her eyes to his hands, bare in front of her, as his paws carefully kneaded their way through the surrounding ground. It was almost mesmerizing the way his fingers stretched through the grass, then claws, as large as her own fingers, drug back through the rocks and clumps, and clay, back toward his lap.
Large hands clenched together, crumbling the soil within his strong palms. Hands then opened and stretched, repeating the movements with careful precision. She chewed at her bottom lip as the dirt continued to be displaced and winced at the healthy grass that was becoming uprooted through the claws.
The movements, smooth and rhythmic, reminded her of running her feet through the sand on her and Tom’s most recent beach vacation. A soothing feeling, almost grounding as her toes weaved through the particles in a slow dance of warmth and calm.

Growing up under the subjugation of Robotnik’s steel dystopia, you have to get your freedom however you can. For Sonic the Hedgehog? It’s through his music and traveling what’s left of the world outside of the Robotnik Republic’s reach. With his siblings, Sonia and Manic, they’ve formed a rock band called “The Underground” and tour the territories still on the fringes of freedom.
One day, their van breaks down near an outpost in the middle of nowhere, where the triplets are approached by a two-tailed fox kit who claims he can help them fix it. All he needs are a few parts and a lift to the next town. As they learn more about this strange kid and where he came from, Sonic, Sonia, and Manic find themselves as targets of Robotnik in his attempts to catch the fox and claim the technology he’s been working on for himself.
The technology in question? A way to travel between realities.

Sonic had missed their weekly race, AGAIN. As Shadow ran to the brother's shared home and workshop, he wondered what the excuse would be this time. 'I forgot!', 'I slept in!'. He was beyond pissed, and fueled that rage to rocket across the hills faster. He was SO beating the shit out of that damned hedgehog.
Shadow stopped in front of the workshop door and knocked twice, but no one came. He huffed in irritation, and opened the door to let himself in. He was expecting Tails to be running back in forth, from project to project with loud music in the background, but to his surprise, that wasn't the case.
Sonic's upper body was out of view, inside the tornado engine. He seemed to be in deep concentration, with his tail wagging to the beat of his whistling and wrench in hand. His blue fur was now a sickly, pale blue because of the oil and grease.
Oh my.
Or: 5 times Shadow witnesses Sonic working with tools and not realizing that Tails got his genius from him, and the one time he does.

It's Sonic's birthday, a time of uncertainty for Tails. There are so many factors to consider, so many things that have to be left unsaid. Tails has a plan to add a bit of extra brightness to Sonic's day but he has to be super careful; one little slip might ruin everything. He has to avoid that at all costs. Sonic deserves the world but Tails can't give that to him.
So maybe this would have to do.
