“What the fuck are you-?” Kyle squinted before noticing Stan’s swollen cheek, busted lip and black eye — the drying remnants of a bloody nose still upon his upper lip and smeared across his not-swollen cheek. Dry gore had sprayed over his face, shirt and caked on his purpled knuckles. Kyle had a hunch that blood didn't belong to the older boy.
"You usually leave it open." Stan choked. He looked like a deer caught in headlights.

The mark had been scrawled half-hazardly into each body, presumably with something dull. Like a screwdriver, or a flat shard of metal. It was undeniably a diamond shape.
He knew who it belonged to. Knew a little too well. But it just couldn't be, because he would never go this far.
"No fingerprints, but this is definitely of the Professor's doing." A static-y, monotone voice called. The man peered over his shoulder, staring at the hooded redhead wearing a black face mask. "There seems to be another blood sample, but I can't get a reading since it's been diluted. And take a look at this." Kite handed the heavily masked hero a bloodied piece of folded paper. Upon unfurling it, a list of coordinates were revealed. "Something horrible is happening, Myst."
"I know," his cold response, "but what the hell is it? And why Chaos of all people?"

Coincidentally, Kenny knows all too well how trivial middle school drama can be. Sure, it made a certain kind of sense that kids who'd never tasted death would care more about relationships, grades, and popularity, but the real test they faced was a matter of life or death and some mortal wasn’t going to make the grade.

Summary
If someone were to ask Stan if he was in love with his best friend, he could easily respond with an entire list of reasons as to why that could never happen. However, even if he came up with all of the reasons in the world as to why he shouldn’t be in love with Kyle, that wouldn’t necessarily mean he wasn’t in love with Kyle. It was, of course, much more complicated than that.
