Summary
The view from their verandah still took Stede’s breath away. Between the kōwhai trees across the road was the view down the valley to Otago Harbour and the stretch of land beyond. This morning the mist over the water was already lifting, lit thinly white by the morning sun.
At times like this, Stede didn’t give his old life in the city a second thought.

“But you’ve got a new home now!” Mr Buttons says, patting the ship’s railing.
“You’re right!” Stede’s smile returns as he gazes out at the water. He runs his hand across the railing. “The Revenge is my new home.”
“Oh no, she’s your new wife,” Mr Buttons announces.
Stede freezes mid-pat. “Beg your pardon?” He looks at the other man.
Mr Buttons meets his gaze unflinchingly. “The sea’s your new home, but the ship’s your new wife.”
Stede gets a bit drunk on his first night away from home and ends up fucking the Revenge.

Stede Bonnet runs through the misty forest.
He is definitely not crying.
He runs in ribboned shoes that were only made for strolling in the city. His white calves flash like those of a deer, covered in silk stockings. And stupid, stupid: his scarlet cape flows in the wind, like a trail of brilliant blood, marking him prey.

"'M cold," Ed murmured, trying to curl into a tighter ball. He groaned, and then coughed a couple of times. "Hurts. Everything hurts."
Stede couldn't breathe for a moment. "...Jesus Mary and Joseph!" he gasped out. "Ed!" He shot to his feet. "I'm gonna... stay right there, Ed!" He fled to the cabin door and burst out onto the deck, where most of his crew was now sleeping in the moonlight. "Roach!" he shouted. "He's worse, Ed's worse! Where are you, Roach, wake up!"

Or, Ed contracts malaria.
