It was just another contract.
It was a contract Illario believes to be completed, which is why he's been able to bury his guilt over the last year. But all it takes is Caterina's determination and a reckless de Riva upstart with a death wish to bring all that guilt surging to the surface again.

Summary
The body laid out before Caterina looks like Lucanis; but Caterina has seen the opera 'Madrigalia', which made use of a particular conceit that opera aficionados coined 'il corpo sbagliato': "the wrong body".
Is it simply grief that clouds the First Talon's widsom? Is she clinging too hard to hope that is not there, or reading too much into a beloved old opera?
Or does the First Talon know that things are not always what they seem?

Summary
Lucanis Dellamorte, the Demon of Vyrantium, has experienced the worst humanity and magic can offer. When a betrayal--because what else could it be?--lands him in the Ossuary, imprisoned with the Venatori he used to kill, he is subjected to magical torture and blood magic that threatens to destroy him. His will to live, to complete his original contract, is all that keeps him going, and even that is starting to slip.
Aurelio "Rook" de Riva may have lost his place in Antiva, but he has gained the kind of contract a Crow can only dream of: hunt down and neutralize the Dread Wolf. Determined to prove himself to his Talon again, Aurelio will do anything to take down his target. To do that, he will need to assemble a team... which will bring him back to Treviso with an unfinished contract to his name.
Aurelio has heard the stories of the Demon of Vyrantium, but never expected to meet him... or work with him... or fall for him. Lucanis, at war with his own personal demons, figurative and literal, doesn't want to waste his second chance at life, but he also doesn't want to hurt anyone. While the team may be winning the fight against the Dread Wolf, Aurelio and Lucanis may be playing a losing game at trying to find love.

Necromancy is a highly specific school of magic that requires the utmost precision and understanding of the boundaries of life and death.
It also presents some rather unique challenges when (normally) polite society, and especially extended family, learns that one is a Necromancer.
