“Todd,” said Neil, ever the persistent one, “when are you going to write more poetry?” He tilted his head to the side, eyes quizzical.
“I don’t know. When I find the words,” said Todd.
“You have the words already!” Neil protested. “You just need something to write about.”
“Like what?”
Another moment of quiet, another laser-bright stare from Neil, as if he were trying to beam an answer directly into Todd’s mind.
He eventually seemed to give up on that, and so he said, “I guess… nature. Childhood. Society.” A pause. “Love.”

Summary
Neil Perry was six years old the first time he felt the sting of his father’s cruel words seep like poison into his skin. In a local supermarket in the small town of Wilmington, Vermont that the Perrys called home, the neatly stacked apples on the quaint wooden display were fresh and crisp.
“Rose, what are you doing still holding his hand in public like that? He’s in the first grade now, he ought to start to become more independent. Boys don’t hold their mother’s hands at this age,” he sneered.☆☽☆
Todd Anderson knew all about shame. If there was one feeling that always returned to him like home, year after year as he got older, it was shame. Shame for feeling different. Shame for hardly being able to get a sentence out without stuttering. Shame for being inferior, inferior to Jeffrey.
A mostly canon-compliant DPS story, following the major events of the movie, but focusing more on the inner thoughts of characters (mostly Neil and Todd). Focuses on Neil and Todd's relationship, Todd's issues with anxiety, Neil's issues with depression and not being able to follow his own path.

Summary
“Why didn’t you leave a note?” Todd wonders, and he can feel Neil watching him like hawks do field mice but being caught feels a little like being saved.
His voice sounds wretched. “…I don’t know.”
Todd thinks about Keating’s hands on his eyes, spinning around the classroom, forcing the poetry out of his stammer. It seems he can only find the right words to say within dizzying darkness. “Do not go gentle into that good night, Neil,” he breathes, waxing poetic because what else is there to do? “Rage.”

He's assigned with one Neil Perry as his roommate, a passionate and outgoing boy who wants to break Todd out of his shell. Todd thinks that Neil is everything the he's not, but they have more in common than they think as they begin to understand each other better.
The new English teacher at Welton introduces the class of 1990 to the beauty of art and literature, and Neil and Todd form a deep bond over the course on their Junior year of high school that they don't fully understand and can't afford to acknowledge.

Steve promised he’d keep these kids safe, so that’s what he’s going to do. After all, he’s a damn good babysitter. Even in creepy Upside Down tunnels that are collapsing more by the minute.
