Helena Potter had never been a particularly lucky person - her entire life story was more than enough proof of that. Everything that had ever happened to her had been a sign of truly bad luck, of the forces of the universe pointing their fingers at her just to laugh at her and her misfortune. She had lost her parents, she had lost friends, she had lost her godfather and her surrogate uncle and she had more than once been close to losing her life as well.
She had lost her life, actually.
Yet, somehow, this situation was so, so much worse than anything she had ever been forced to face before. I grow weary.” He looked down at his own hands, pale against the dark fabric of his trousers. “I am, in all ways that matter now, very much like you, Hob Gadling. My body will not age. It cannot die. Unless I choose to accept my sister’s gift. I am… suspended. Between what I was and what men are.”

Summary
The last person Dream expects to see in Burgess' basement is Hob Gadling, who has apparently been asked to consult on the restoration of the historic manor. He is pleased when his old acquaintance helps free him without a second thought, despite their past squabble, but he is horrified to realise that breaking the binding circle does nothing to return his powers to him, and that he cannot return to the Dreaming after having been released from his cage.
Weak, confused, and distressingly human, he consents to being taken back to Hob's home to be cared for until he can regain his strength. When he falls asleep that night (which he should never have had need for), he finally finds his way back to his palace, only to find someone else sitting on his throne, wearing his ruby, and claiming his name as her own — Dream of the Endless.

Jaskier wasn't in the market for a replacement witcher. Not after Geralt had broken his heart so thoroughly. There must surely be more appreciative audiences and travel companions to be had, and if he was lucky maybe even with a smidge less chaos and mortal peril thrown into the bargain.

Maybe he would have to travel one day to find them and wouldn’t that be amazing? To traverse the land and return home with the person that was meant just for him.
At least, until the black mark started to appear where normally calcification would be. To be bonded to a Bearer was a life sentence. His soulmate was a magic user, a Bearer. With every new mark he received Clive understood one thing.
His other half was out there and whatever life they were living was a hard one, a harsh one.
