Summary
The Europa Project was ambitious: more than a hundred crew, mostly civilian scientists, flew to Jupiter's icy moon aboard the Commonwealth Space Commission vessel Erebus under the command of Sir John Franklin. They planned to spend a year studying ice core samples drilled out of the surface, and secure the rights to mine for resources. But within days of landing, communications ceased. For months, the ship and all her crew were presumed lost.
Now, satellites have picked up images of Erebus on her way back to Earth. A ship, the Lyra, commanded by Sir James Ross, has been dispatched to intercept it, and journalist Sophia Cracroft has been assigned to the crew to report on their mission of mercy. But what they find will be more than mercy can solve.

And so they dispersed, Fitzjames leading his men back the short distance to Erebus, while Edward, flanked by Irving and Hodgson, headed the long distance back to Terror. The walk was almost entirely silent, broken by the occasional whisper as the crew processed the news. When back aboard, he went first to the wardroom, then crossed the border into Crozier’s berth.
He stopped before the desk, sat down with a sigh, and opened the logbook. Flipping to the first blank page, Edward dipped the pen into ink, and began to write. The harsh contrast between Crozier's script and his own stuttering, clumsy hand was painful to look at.
June 15 1847. 69.93/-98.71. Captain Crozier abandoned post. Lt. Edward Little assumed acting command.
In which Francis Crozier departs on the rescue sledge party before Sir John dies, and Edward Little finds himself as acting captain of H.M.S Terror.

If getting arrested for someone else's crime wasn't bad enough, Jane Irving, who she had been dating for four months now, had dumped her just a few hours earlier. They had both gotten catastrophically drunk in order to cope, and she was still feeling the buzz of that particular poor choice, ready to vomit for her third time that night, consciously suppressing a dry heave out of embarrassment for how Harriet Goodsir -- glaring daggers in her peripheral vision -- would react. Edie and her had fought, and she now felt awfully sorry for it, nearly as sorry as she felt over Jane. She had lost that stupid miniature boat headpiece she spent hours making, her wallet, and the fig bar she kept for hunger emergencies like this one in the fire. One of the heels of her brand new, absolutely adorable satin Valentino pumps somehow snapped off. Her phone was dead, which meant she wouldn't even know if Jane was still trying to reach her.
If this wasn't rock bottom for one Georgiana Henrietta Hodgson...
