Surrounded by pastel décor, forced sing-alongs, and relentlessly smiling campers, Wednesday prepares herself for a summer of torture.
But then she meets an unlikely ally: a boy whose father has shipped him off in hopes that the camp can “fix” his so-called bad behavior. His darkness doesn’t scare Wednesday—it intrigues her. "It's a temperamental beast with a mind of its own, and it doesn't help that the instructions are in Italian." 'Sounds like another temperamental beast I know', he thinks at the hyde who has gone quiet and focused.
The petite girl walks towards him and snatches the manual from his hands, scanning over the pages quickly and then looking at the machine. This close he can smell her despite the coffee scent everywhere.'Delicious.'
'Yes–wait, what? No, you can’t eat her just because she smells great!'
'I don’t want to eat her per se, just a little bite.'
'No! Calm down.'
Her smell saturates the space around him with a very distinctly musky and feminine scent along with a faint scent of aniseed. He finds it completely distracting.

As Wednesday endeavors to find a way to control the visions that have brought her to the dreadful school her parents have been trying to get her to attend, she impulsively throws herself into any mystery that presents itself to her. Starting with a boy who reveals himself to be much more than an ordinary barista.

She needed to wash the dirt and grime from being buried alive and the Iago Tower explosion from her body and then she needed to sit at her typewriter and become Viper de la Muerte, typing until her fingers bled. Anything to escape the confusing cacophony of emotions threatening to overwhelm her.
When she finds an unconscious figure curled up in the back of her closet, clearly hiding and hurting, her heart sinks. There will be no escape from her damning words tonight. "I missed." Yeah right.

She studied him—every inch of the strained muscles, the fevered eyes, the chains dug into brick. He was desperate, despite all the bravado. That much was obvious. She could smell the tang of his fear hanging in the air like pheromones.
