Summary
Vampires are a category of Fae creature which are Unseelie and thus are bound by specific and strange rules, but to differing extents. Turned Vampires - Vampires who were once fully human - are not true Fae. Dhampirs and Upyirs, however, are both true Fae and are thus bound by all laws of the Faerie. Upon their true deaths they will not leave behind bodies, instead turning to ash and smoke.
Or: The one in which Scott Goldsmith is a Dhampir - half-human, half-Vampire, and all ancient evil. This suits him quite well - it's been over a thousand years since he's remembered what mortality was like. And then he awakens to a world changed and fledglings that call him friend. And just maybe he can admit that it's nice to feel truly loved, instead of feared.
But once Unseelie, always Unseelie...right?
If only these strange, annoying beacons hadn't been placed in a suspiciously perfect circle around his castle. Where had they come from, anyway?

When Grian joins Mumbo working at The Hermit Coffee Co., he is thrown into a world of caffiene and chaos, with meddling co-workers, rambunctious regulars, and an absolutely henious amount of group chats. The friends he left back home miss him, Mumbo's college friends (cough, frat bros, cough) keep pestering him, and his new friendship with a certain scarred individual is developing in a way he never expected.
Will he be able to shake off the meddling redstoners? What will happen when there are two potential romances blossoming on either side of him? And will these baristas ever stop texting each other and just make me my goddamn soy-milk capuccino?

Grian, who wanted nothing more than to forget his Watcher past, was quite happy not to be worshipped at all. So when the Hermits collectively started praying to Xelqua and Grian started to gain a lot of Watcher magic, it put a real damper on his mood, health, self-perception and his relationships. With Mumbo gone off-world, it was now up to Scar, Pearl and Xisuma to worry about him – if Grian would let them. But Grian was nothing if not stubborn. He’d get through this alone, right?

Summary
Grian never thought he’d win the first game, but in hindsight, he’s glad he did. Sure, it was painful coming back to hermitcraft and realizing no one but him was cursed with the knowledge of what had happened. It was especially painful still loving Scar, and Scar being none the wiser.
Still, it got easier to manage with time. Besides, it’s what he deserves for making such a horrible deal in the first place. He alone would know what truly happened in the game, and if that lessened the suffering of the other participants, then it was worth it.
Boy was he wrong.

Scott's vision starts to swim. The garlic burns on its way down, the flavor indescribably horrific on his tongue. He fights the urge to gag; his stomach tries to crawl its way up his throat.
The charade of being human is tiresome, and Scott is ready to abandon it. This whole little act is likely more trouble than it's worth, if he's being honest.
But the look that Sausage gives him is so worth it.

“You have been coughing an awful lot tonight. Don't tell me you're dying on me, little hunter?”
The vampire gives him a final lick before he lets him answer, satisfied with his meal. It takes him a moment to realize Avid didn't respond with anything. Scott notices he isn't looking at him as he rises, instead having turned his head to the side. He releases his arms from the grip, the hunter barely moving, as he studies him.
"Oh, my…” “Really? That's so sad.”
Scott gives him a charming smile. “Are you sure you don't want to give being a vampire a chance, dear?"
Or... When Avid goes to meet Shelby at the obelisk, they are interrupted by a surprise guest.

It will be useless, obviously, considering her roommate certainly isn’t a vampire. But, now, next to Shelby's red stringed conspiracy board on all the very real supernatural beings in her life, is a much smaller one stating:

They decide to use their slightly worse ball of red string, just to really drive home how unnecessary the whole thing is.

Just generally? And think whatever goal you have that you’re trying to dramatically solo is something I would want to help you achieve?”

Scott stares in surprise, taking a few extra frightening moments to try and process what they’ve said before a sudden roll of laughter spills from his lips, held behind his quivering palm, “Now who’s acting strange?” He chuckles.

Avid can’t tell if it’s pity, second hand vampiric embarrassment, unbridled disgust, contemptuous anger, or sheer stupendous amazement that colours Scott’s voice. Its precise nature is chimeric: shifting like a kaleidoscope with every syllable wrapped in his bemused, aloof, haughty voice. Avid finds himself growing strangely fond of it as the Oakhurst nights drag longer and bloodier.
He finds Scott’s demeaning seizing of his chin like he’s appraising cattle summoning drastically less fondness.

If asked, Pyro would definitely say that living in Scott’s castle is good. It’s amazing, even—there’s cattle to eat, chickens to bleed, it’s grand and beautiful and really lives up to the hype, Scott’s got a wonderful eye for decorating and it shows—and he’s not only saying that because of the Nightly Affirmations! It really is a lovely castle! Pyro has passed many a late morning crouching in the shaded part of the courtyard and watching the blood fountain trickle! There are lots of bats to watch… he doesn’t have to eat anything if he doesn’t want to, even if he’s hungry…
“I still don’t want to come out,” Apo says from within her room. Prison. Whatever. It’s her room, technically, but Scott said if she was going to sulk like a teenager over being turned she could stay in her room until her attitude improved, and Pyro knows how futile it is to try and work around direct orders like that.

Scott breathes in, and smells Avid’s fear. The thin scent of it cuts through the damp mouldering stench of the house and the stink of the animals outside. It seems to Scott a pale purple, like heather, heady and arresting.
Humans each have their own individual brand of fear. Avid is generous with his, for Scott. He makes it delightfully easy to draw out.

Scott offers to help Avid with his wound. Avid agrees. It’s hardly Scott’s problem if he ends up regretting it.
