The castle sits on a hill, veiled in mist, the spires and turrets rising out of the clouds. The nearest village is ten kilometres to the west, and the only road runs through dark forest, the pine and birch and larch trees crowding together, branches blotting out the sun. If Kenny were a man capable of fear, he would be afraid here, surrounded by wilderness, the eyes of the forest at his back. The road, wide enough for a coach or a waggon, paved and maintained twice a year by crews sent out from the village, slopes upwards, and his horse slows. The old mare is tired after the long journey from Mitras. At last the steep incline levels off and a horn blares, marking his approach. The high gates swing open, and a little man in blue livery bows low while a boy appears to take the horse.

In the haste to disembark at the station, one of those small provincial stops where there’s only a platform in the middle of the wilderness with a splintery bench and a little kiosk with a grumpy station attendant where the train slows to a crawl but doesn’t precisely stop, Hange left the briefcase with their research notes and their letter of introduction from the university on the luggage rack, and so it was with a sour mood that they stalked out into the dark of the rural night in search of their contact.

Their last weekend home in Liberio, before the final intelligence briefing, before Magath’s stern words, more threat than encouragement (even Reiner had known Magath had opposed the mission vociferously and, beyond the point of professional prudence, had fought against dispatching four titans on an uncharted island without backup until he was threatened with a demotion), before the photo spread in The National Inquirer, and before the ticker-tape parade and the cheering crowds seeing them off, they had gone to a matinee at the cinema. The theatre in the internment zone was the old-fashioned kind, with a floor show and a band and a girl playing the piano in a sequined gown and a feather boa, and most of the films were old. They watched a silent film about a hypnotist who used a sleepwalker to commit heinous murders. Reiner and Bertholdt sat in the back, eating peanuts out of a striped paper bag and furtively holding hands in the dark, the first time they did it, pretending to be afraid of the fake blood and the crashing cymbals and ominous use of the zither.

Waiting to attack Shiganshina, Reiner indulges in a fantasy of homecoming.
In the morning, they bathe (hot water at last, by the nine). They eat, ravenous after five years subsisting off of cabbage and watery gruel and coarse bread. Bertholdt savours the tinned beef, the soft white bread with its chemical aftertaste, and the waxy ration kit chocolate bar like it’s a feast. Reiner passes him his foiled-wrapped packet. Presses it into his palm.
When they're home, he’ll buy a box of truffles and hand feed them to Bertholdt. Reiner will stand in line with all the real Marleyans, and nobody will be able to stop him. He’ll get a box with red and white stripes and the Di Bruno's Chocolatier logo in curling gold script, the chocolates nestled in tissue paper like tiny treasures. They'll stretch out on his little wooden bed in his mother's house, under the old film posters and the Warrior Programme propaganda he used to tack to the crumbling plaster walls back when he idolised the Warriors and becoming a titan holder was just a little boy's dream. He’ll pop the chocolate into Bertholdt's eager mouth.

Ackerman is taciturn on the best day.
They move through the course, Annie pushing herself to keep up. Together, they attack the last dummy titan, slicing neatly into the nape and landing in the grassy field where Instructor Shadis and Instructor Belmont are waiting, clipboards in hand and stern expressions on their faces.
“Full points, Ackerman, Leonhart. Dismissed.”
In the equipment shed, Annie observes Mikasa’s strong back and the muscular curve of her buttocks under the tight uniform trousers. She’s grown taller, and her uniform is too small, her wrists and ankles sticking out from the cuffs. There’s a new swell to her breasts, too. Annie blushes and looks away before Mikasa can catch her staring.
There’s no point in mooning around over Mikasa Ackerman, who, aside from being an enemy combatant, is desperately in love with that idiot Eren Yeager.

She waves her hand vaguely as if to indicate the whole obliterated future, all her silly plans. Mikasa reaches across Armin's desk and interlaces their fingers.
“Don't go there. You’ll be alone. Come to Shiganshina. Stay with me. For the summer at least, or longer. For as long as you want.”

“Yeah. Yeah, I am. I was there.”
He’s dizzy saying it. The battle rushes at him. Terror and desperation. The strength of his titan (a strange longing grips him at what he has lost). The surety that he would die on Eren's back. The unreality of his survival, neither desired nor anticipated. The wrongness of his fragile human body, exhausted and bleeding.
The man makes a sign to ward off evil. “Then I guess you better come in.”

Summary
Reiner searches for Jean at the bar after he misses another information brief. Things escalate.
There’s a moment of disorientation as he steps into the gloom of the bar. It’s dark and cool inside, the usual smell of beer and liquor, a haze of cigarette smoke, the jukebox playing the same record on a loop. Nothing much coming out of Liberio these days. The bartender washes glasses in a sink of soapy water. Two men play cards, faces grim, a pile of coins and crumpled bills between them. A girl titters in the corner; a young soldier's hand running up her thigh, and she throws her head back, blond hair a corona around her face in the dim, shadowy room. The place has a subterranean feel, although it’s just off the palazzo on a twisty little side street.
“Time to go home, Jean.”
