“Does Shizun feel better now?” Luo BingHe asks, his voice still cracking around the edges, on the thin line between absolute rage and utter grief.
He’s blaming himself. Of course he is. He promised himself he’d never let harm come on Shen QingQiu’s way again, after all. Granted, he failed a couple of times, and Shen QingQiu may or may not have lost count of how many wife plots already hit him (a lie, it was thirteen now) but still. What did Shen QingQiu have to do to make his silly, stupid husband understand that it’s not his fault?
He lets out a heavy sigh. He raises a hand to pat the top of Luo BingHe’s head. Luo BingHe, his sweet if foolish husband, lets his gaze fall to Shen QingQiu’s other hand, now gently caressing his own. His eyes glisten, but no tears fall. Shen QingQiu understood this a long time ago: Luo BingHe never cries when it truly matters.
This Master is alright, Shen QingQiu says as gently as he can, you don’t have to worry anymore.
Except there is a big, very real reason to worry, namely: Shen QingQiu’s voice.aka Shen QingQiu is hit by a curse. Confessions ensue, memories resurface and that one name finally comes to light.

Those Days– which he had dubbed them whenever he forgot that he wasn’t supposed to be thinking about it– had been cropping up more frequently since they had escaped the feywild. You had more time to think about things you rather wouldn’t when a hundred-thousand gold piece debt to the most dangerous man in Agwè wasn’t hanging over your head, he supposed as he wiped off his drawn-on mustache. It had been smudged at some point during the day. Probably Gideon’s fault.”

Gideon doesn’t think he could be dangerous towards Kremy even if he tried, and he obviously isn’t gonna try. He needs something from Kremy–well, there’s something only Kremy can give him, and Gideon knows better than anyone how Kremy Lecroux deals with threats: throwing Gideon Coal at them. So Gideon being the threat wouldn’t make a damn lick of sense.
Neither does this thought rattling around his head like broken ribs do when someone’s tossed in a pigpen after being punched in the body. “What if, and I’m just saying this as one of those hypotheticals, y’know, but what if I really did murder Chuckles?”
The Witchlight Carnival is a terrible occasion to wonder how your life has led up to this point, but Gideon finds himself doing exactly that in a rare moment of quiet both inside and outside of his mind. Quiet includes chatting with one Kremy Lecroux, of course, because that's how Gideon makes a living.
