"I think I'm scared."
Link can feel her frown emanating through her skin. Marin shifts, lifting her head and turning towards Link. Grabbing Link's cheeks, she forces eye contact. Warm, breathtaking brown meets soft violet.
"Listen to me," she says. "You will wake the Wind Fish, and you'll take me with you as we leave this tiny island and explore the world. You'll show me your uncle and your house, and Hyrule. Whatever you can think of. Don't cucco out on me now."
Marin gives Link a good luck charm for Mt. Tamaranch. She doesn't get the chance to return it.

Link felt that familiar pull in his gut that he hadn’t felt since he was fourteen years old, stopping him in his tracks immediately. The air around him suddenly felt charged and energized, prickling at his skin and making his hair stand on end.
Outwardly he groaned, feigning annoyance that he was expected to be a hero once more. However, he couldn’t stop the grin that was already finding its way onto his face at the sight of the swirling portal that had formed on the deck of the ship he shared with his mates.

It is entirely reclaimed by nature, but signs of life still show through the windows. It rests in the shade of an enormous tree, so tall it has her craning her neck to see the top.
"What's this?" Zelda asks.
"Home," Link says.
The old Hyrule will never exist again, but for all they lost, a new world can rise from the ashes.

"I don't know why you want to- need to do this." Impa said, crossing both of her arms in her yukata. "Zelda isn't mad at you, Link. And even if they were, I don't get how hair dye would help you."
Link gripped the bottle of dye tightly.
Impa was his friend. His best friend, only superseded by his twin.
"I guess…" Link started slowly. "It's like armor."
Link didn't turn to face Impa.
Instead, he read the label of the hair dye, once, then twice, three times-
"Armor for what, Link?" Impa was usually painfully blunt, but now her voice was impossibly soft.
It was painfully gentle.
Link laughed awkwardly, turning around to face Impa.
"I don't know." Link said, voice lacking its normal confidence. "My emotions, I guess?" Link dismissively waved his hand. "Wanna dye your hair?" He was blatantly deflecting and he didn't care.

For as long as he can remember, Legend has always been uncomfortable in his own skin. Then salvation comes: the only catch is that being a girl happened in a dream that doesn't exist.
Except, as Legend is slowly coming to realize, maybe it still exists in certain ways after all.
