Summary
When school does end, finally, Fig always wordlessly heads off to her room for a quick nap, foregoing the afternoon, post-school snack that Jawbone prepares for the household. She’d rather sleep than eat at most times. Her nap is her alone time, her quiet time when she can shut off her brain and stop putting on a show for the people around her. It’s not out of her routine when she drags herself up the stairs to get to her room, her backpack having been discarded in the living room in favor of not having to haul it up with her.
What is out of her routine, though, is when she finally stumbles her way into her room, closing and locking the door behind her, and her eyes fall on the sight of Ayda curled up as tightly as Fig has ever seen her, resting on Fig’s bed but not comfortably under the covers or relaxed in any way.

He hears Fabian laugh, sparkling and glittering like the reflection of the sun on the sea and hears in the background as a door closes. Immediately, there’s a quick shuffling and a moment later Fabian’s breathing is far closer to the crystal microphone than it was before, sounding far more manic.
“Okay… I need a date very badly, Riz. If I do not seem properly spoken for then that guest list of gay Barbarians will descend upon me like a shark in bloody waters. I love and care for Ragh but literally every one of his friends has come onto me including his lovely fiance and I will not be able to handle an entire day of Barbarian come-ons. Mumbo drops his hands from the ceiling to cross his arms petulantly. “In fact, why isn’t Scar taking up this job?”
Scar is, indeed, sitting very daintily on a plush chair that Grian hadn’t seen him drag in. “Don’t let me bother you!” he says, giving them a wide wave. “Wouldn’t want to interrupt your learning!”
“I didn’t even want to be here,” Mumbo bemoans. “I’m not good at gardening, Grian, we both know it! I could be- I could be building a flying machine right now.”
He says that wistfully, and Grian takes one hand off of the dirt he’s pressing against the ground - ceiling - whatever, and sets it on Mumbo’s very white shirt. “Mumbo,” he says, with a gentle and caring tone. His friend looks up at him.
Mumbo’s dark eyes are practically voids in the dank man-made cavern, and dirt flecks have rubbed their ways onto his face like a smattering of stars.
“I’m only going to say this once,” Grian continues, and the shoulder underneath his hand relaxes. “Get good.”
Or: Grian has some grass issues. Mumbo and Scar try to help.

“Thanks, man, appreciate it,” Pete had nodded, and Kingston had left, shutting the door behind him.
Now, Pete wishes, a bit naively, that Kingston had stayed for a while longer. Talked to him, maybe. Told him more about the Unsleeping City or Nod or any of these other weird words that everyone else is acting like are totally sane and normal.
