Even after one and a half years away, Tommy still remembered the path back to Pogtopia like the back of his hand. He hardly even needed to look as he ducked and weaved under tree branches, clambered over the worn out path by the hill and recognised the exact entrance to the cave system.
He hesitated at the door.
A calming hand gently touched his shoulder, "Come on in, mate. They'll be waiting for you."
"What if... what if they don't want to see me?"
"They do, I promise. Just come inside."
Tubbo gave his hand a small squeeze and sent him a reassuring smile before clambering through the gap in the vines.
Or
Two days before the festival, Tommy and Tubbo run away to start a new life on the other side of the server. One and a half years later, they return to the land that was once their home.

Some doctors said there was something wrong with his pain receptors and nerve endings, others said it was repressed trauma, some suggested that his body had been so starved for contact that his brain only associated touch with violence, some had no explanation at all, but when Tommy's skin came into contact with someone else's it scorched like a fire, red hot and painful, causing his head to fill with cotton and his vision to blur. So he avoided physical contact, simple as that. He avoided hugs, high fives, fist pumps, made the excuse that he just wasn't a touchy person, which was fine.
He'd never had anyone want to hug him anyway.
Or...
For Tommy, touch is painful, to the point that he's never had a hug in his life. Tubbo sets out to change that.

Summary
Tommy had been in the foster system for as long as he could remember. His first memory was of a girl who he could no longer remember the face of pouring hot soup into his lap and then telling everyone else he'd pissed himself (his second memory was of him tackling her to the ground and kicking her ass, but that was here nor there), and he was fine with that. He was fine with the fact that he never got to have a Christmas with his parents before he found out that Santa wasn't real. He was fine that he never had the mind-shattering discovery that, no, his parents names are not in fact 'mom' and 'dad'.
He was fine that his first memory wasn't of his mothers or his fathers face, and that it wasn't paired with their voices lovingly asking him what he wanted for breakfast and how he slept, and laughing at the way his pajama's of some silly cartoon for toddlers were too long for him as they kissed the top of his head. It's not like he'd spent countless hours and dozens of sleepless nights imagining what they were like, how they sounded, who he took after the most. No. He was perfectly fine that he'd never know them.
Who needs family, anyways? Certainly not Tommy.
