She nurses her pounding headache and slaps her hand against his shoulder repeatedly. “Yo, wake up. Wake up!”
“What?” He manages to say as he pushes her hands away. “It’s so early. Why are you awake right now?”
She lifts his wrist up and shoves it into his face. “This is why I’m awake.”
He glances at his wrist and then immediately drops it back down.
“So?”
“So?” She parrots back and nearly screeches. “So you don’t think the fact that we’re soulmates is something that you should be awake for?”

They worked the school newspaper together - the Blue and Gold - and they had been at odds since the day they met. Where she was meticulous, he was lazy. Where she was tidy, he was messy. Where he put too many commas in an article, she was there to cross them out with her red pen that he hated so much. They despised each other.
And they were both competing to be Editor-in-Chief for their senior year now that Nancy Woods was graduating.
They hated each other’s guts, always issuing low blows at each other whenever Nancy wasn’t in the room (they’d hatched a ceasefire when she was in the room for her sake after she had threatened to kick them both off the paper).
Betty despised him and his perfectly unruly hair under that stupid beanie and his insanely blue eyes and his aggravating leather jacket--

One of his hands was curled into a fist, pressing against the metal just above her shoulder, while his other one was splayed out on the delicate skin of her throat, his grip strong enough to send trickles of fear running through her blood, but not tight enough to choke her. His dark features were twisted in a snarl and his breaths were coming out in pants. His body was pressed up against hers and the space between them was non-existent.
Betty couldn’t breathe for an entirely different reason now.
