It would be different if he had any doubt as to Laurence’s affections.
Every night Laurence –always up with the lark– rises from his chair first, to carefully put away his voluminous correspondence or set his book upon the shelf. “Goodnight, Tharkay,” he will say, brushing carefully by the man’s chair. Tharkay will reach out and seize whatever part of him has come most conveniently into reach and say “It is Tenzing, damn you,” and tilt his face up to be kissed.

Cowardice was not, all things considered, one of the traits with which Tharkay generally associated himself. He could not go so far as to list bravery among his assets—more often it was a sort of ruthless practicality—but he had willingly put himself through enough dangers to avoid the mantle of coward.
That morning, however, ruthless practicality, driven by a need to ensure his own survival, led him to the coward’s route, and he took it with relieved ease. He heard stirring from Laurence’s room as he passed on the way to the dining room, and hurriedly took himself off in a different direction instead. He was far better served to avoid that conversation for as long as possible, he had no doubt.

It was an offer of princely generosity. Ash's mouth was dry. "And what would you have from me?" he asked.
Something flared in Webster's cool expression for a moment, like a shark flashing a fin in still waters. "A month," he said.

It all started because Laurence had come into the sitting room when Granby was visiting Tharkay’s estate, mildly cross and holding Tharkay’s greatcoat, which was rumpled from lying in a damp heap in the entryway for two whole days before Laurence noticed it. He had entered the room while shaking it out and folding it, as such a fine piece of clothing deserved, and saying something chiding, along the lines of, “Tenzing, did you never learn you must care for your things if you wish for them to last--?”
“Ah,” Tharkay said, slouching in his practiced way and tilting his sly smile at Granby, “here’s the missus.”

Afterwards the tale was told only by those that had loved her. It was translated, for her kinsman Elrond Half-elven, by Bilbo Baggins who brought his own Hobbitish misinterpretations of Noldorin custom to the text. So when the stories said that she was not wholly unwilling, while they were not wrong, they were rather missing the point.
