Sometimes she swore he wanted Mayuri as his lieutenant and he was just waiting for the right time to throw her out. Other times he would sit next to her and ask her to run him through her numbers again and smile fondly as she rambled about her theorems. The next day she would overhear him telling Mayuri about them and saying things like “Isn’t Hiyori-san brilliant?” with such pride in his voice that she would regretfully wonder if she knew anything about him at all.
And then he would do something stupid again and she would go back to assuming that Urahara Kisuke was simply a man given to platitudes and condescension because clearly being that naturally gifted made everyone else a cute performing monkey. All she had was what she knew to be certain. Numbers and figures could never lie to her, never abandon her, never change or alter her perception. Kisuke was predictable, the units of Pi wrapped in a singular individual, going on endlessly, but reassuring in that it would always be in the same order. She didn’t have to like the way the figures lined up, but at least she could be secure in the knowledge that she knew what to expect.
Until one day the numbers didn’t add up.
