Summary
Castiel's spent most of his adult life keeping his head down and staying out of trouble. This is a deliberate choice on his part, because as a cousin of the King, he'd rather stay unimportant and forgotten. This changes abruptly when King Michael decides that he has a better use for Castiel: he is to be wed to a noble member of the neighboring Republic, as part of an agreement between their two nations.

It’s just a sliver, just a glimpse, golden eyes staring at him, white hair spilling over a shoulder. Red lips. Wei Ying shivers. His head pounds, the dream comes rushing back to him. The moldy damp smell, the certainty that he’ll die. He lets go of the hand-hold, brushes a hand over his wrist, imagines he can still feel the cuts there.

Wei Wuxian’s been desperate not to get his brother in trouble, sure it’s what he owes the Jiang, sure it’s half his fault anyway, and tells no one. But Lan Zhan has started to put the pieces together during classes.
