"It felt like it almost happened in slow motion.
Sam jumped from the roof, and Colby felt a trickle of fear, almost as if his mind had calculated the trajectory of his fall, saw that Sam would not land in the fluffiest part of the bean bags but in the thinnest part he could have landed in.
But maybe Colby just told himself that in retrospect. At the time, he probably thought that there was nothing wrong.
Nothing wrong, that was, until he heard Sam’s cry."

Dipping the flannel in the soapy water, Sam imprinted circles all across Colby, his fingers pruning with the water. Colby tipped his head back so Sam could clean around Colby’s throat, and the nape of his neck. “Should I do your back?” Sam asked, Colby grunted in reply, shifting his position to place himself where Sam could more easily reach.

Desperation sits heavy on Mike's tongue. The taste of it is metallic like blood and nails. Will looks at him, half sat up in bed with sleepily confused eyes. It was as if Mike was waking a child from a deep slumber. But as he sat on his knees, tears streaming down his face because of a dream he can only vaguely remember, he found his hand slowly moving towards Will's and gripping it tightly. The words came out of his mouth before he could stop them and when he watched Will's eyes widen at the words, Mike felt instant regret.
"Tell me I'm good."
Logline: When Mike wakes from another vecna-fueled nightmare, he desperately seeks comfort from Will. Will seems just as desperate to give it to him.

The sudden realization that he's 5 years too late has him heaving again. He let Will slip through his fingers like water, evaporating before Mike even knew he wanted to find purchase. Like always, Mike arrives when the train has already left the station. Missing every opportunity extended to him by the universe, every goddamn time.
He feels a sharp pang where his heart is, and that must be because it's shattering.
So this is why they call it heartbreak.
