"You're mine, Cross. You have been since I claimed you. You will be for as long as you breathe," he murmured, and ex-guardsmen loathed how a part of him savored that admission. He couldn't quell the shiver that coursed through him at those possessive words. The part of him that craved affirmation and yearned to be wanted ached with every syllable. "And I entrusted you with my little brother. Entrusted you with watching over my only kin. You should be expressing gratitude to your King," he said sweetly.
Cross recognized it as a cue, understanding that Nightmare anticipated a display of appreciation. It was a struggle not to slip into old habits, to resist when his mind swam and the weight of negativity pressed down upon him so relentlessly.
"I own you, Cross," Nightmare declared with a sinister satisfaction, his voice a venomous melody that echoed in the dim dungeon. "Every fiber of your being is mine to command. You're tethered to me, bound by the threads of your own inadequacy."

But, after so many years of collecting concubines and torturing prisoners, there is a whisper. A rumor, of a forest which comes and goes. And a being who lives in the center, a seller of wares and collector of souls.
Could it be the same forest? Could it be…him? Maybe Nightmare will finally get his happy ending.
