Summary

Summary
Abducted from the Mighty Nein, Caleb Widogast is reacquainted with the cruelties of mankind via an old punishment: the stockade.
"Traitor.
Traitor.
It’s like the word snatches all of the moisture from Caleb’s mouth, and he gapes at the guard, face paling in record time. “I am not a traitor,” he whispers. His confidence is gone now – he knows the truth better than anyone, and this is no longer it (The blood of innocents under his nails, the tortured wails of his parents, the betrayal of everyone he was supposed to protect).
The guard scoffs, releasing Caleb’s head with a jerk that clips his chin against the lower board. Caleb thinks he feels his skin split slightly on the impact, although it is hard to tell for sure. When he looks up again the guard is gone, back to his post outside of Caleb’s range of vision.
Caleb doesn’t call out to him again, just drowns in the terror of his future and the hopelessness of his present."

Maybe it was the way his eyes sharpened as he looked around, mostly towards the ceiling, or how he stood taller, the way he squared his shoulders. Whatever it had been, it instantly worried him. He stood from his chair, just as the man zeroed in on something and began to walk, gait too long and hurried to be natural, one hand deep inside his coat, completely concealed.
Something deep inside Fjord, roiling in his gut, screamed at him to move.
In a single, fluid, practiced movement, the man lifted his hand. It blackened and flaked and ignited with a snap, bright with arcane flame and energy Fjord had only ever heard about in stories and urban legends.
And then an alarm went off. And the sprinklers began raining down.

"Arthur was terrified when he saw Merlin make up his mind to jump. He put on a burst of speed, willing his body to give everything he had so he could just-reach out and….He crashed at full speed into the warlock, knocking them both out of breath, but most importantly, far away from the edge of the ravine. Merlin fought him, kicking and clawing for escape, but it was clear that whatever had fueled him for so long was gone, and eventually the kicking and punching and shouting was gone, and Merlin wept in Arthur’s arms, trembling hard.
“Sorry, so sorry, so so sorry. ‘M so sorry, Arthur,” he sobbed desperately, and Arthur held him close, heart racing and eyes wet. “I’m so sorry, please don’t burn me. I’m so sorry. I didn’ mean to, I was born with it.” Merlin cried, and Arthur shushed him gently."

“He’s wanted for crimes against the Empire.”
“That doesn’t tell me where you’re taking him.”
The captain raises his chin in clear challenge, taking a step toward Fjord, hand on the hilt of his sword. “You’re right. It doesn’t. You keen to join him?”
He knows what he should do.
He should back off, feign apology, humility, let them take Caleb to who knows where, and do who knows what to him while he and the rest of the Nein figure out a strategy, a plan. A way to get Caleb back safely with minimal threat to the group.
He should do that, but then he looks over to Caleb, in the dirt on his knees, eyes wide and frantic and scared, and the words are out of his mouth before he can stop them.

Summary
In retrospect, he should have known better.
Molly assumes it’s a misunderstanding; it wouldn’t be the first time his infernal heritage has caused him trouble, someone of small mind and smaller sensibilities taking exception to his presence and assuming he’s up to no good. Point being, he isn’t overly surprised when he’s approached by two Crownsguard asking that he please come with them.
They’re polite, apologetic, and he’ll kick himself later at how easily they take him in, how completely he buys it. It takes him longer than it should to realize they’re not headed to the city’s stockade, to realize they’re going the wrong way. When he turns to one of them to ask where they’re going, that’s when everything goes to shit as the man at his back clocks him on the back of the head and the world goes dim and watery. Before he can react, the man hits him again and Molly crumples, everything going dark.
