Shane glanced up again, watching as the captain gestured vaguely toward Shane without looking at him. “Shane Hollander.” The name came out of his mouth like it was laced with poison.
Shane became very aware of many eyes turning to him now. He felt a few claps on the back and tried to force a tight smile. But his eyes wandered back up to Ilya Rozanov, who was looking at him with so much quiet contempt, that Shane started to understand the phrase ‘if looks could kill.’

OR: Ilya spirals into a deep depression when Shane breaks things off with him definitively after a horrifying run in with their feelings (and tuna melts).
They go no contact for close to a year until Shane is unexpectedly traded to Boston the following season.
Shane finds his new captain is a version of Ilya he's never seen before: dark, icy, and distant.
But their newfound proximity mixed with old feelings creates a complicated dynamic that they can't ignore forever.

Summary
In 2006, the Hollander family billeted a player to the Ottawa 67s - Ilya Rozanov, a 15 year old Russian Bostonian with a hockey talent to rival Shane's.
Years later, they’d once again share a team, and a home: Boston College.“Why did you choose Boston? It’s not like you couldn’t have gone anywhere else.”
Shane remembered his surprise at Ilya’s commitment. The college didn’t exactly fit Ilya’s predisposition.
Ilya looked thoughtful for a second, underneath the tumult.
“Other than the obvious? I don’t know. I think I just felt like this place was where I was meant to go.”
Shane understood that.
Ilya nudged him. "Now you. Why are you here, Canadian boy?”
The corner of Shane’s lip raised, and he shrugged.
“I wanted to be more than hockey. At least, for a little while longer.”
Ilya’s eyes locked on him, and a small smile reset the lines of Ilya’s face. “You couldn’t have done that in Canada?”
Shane laughed lightly. “Sure, but Canada didn’t have you.”
Ilya looked down at the ground, and didn’t look back up as he spoke.

Their words aren't even hurled at him. They're tossed about carelessly, without insinuation or thought; yet that doesn't stop them from sliding under his skin, tearing through his flesh, and burying into his bones. He shakes himself, blinking over and over, trying to clear the haze that has settled like fog over his vision.
Long fingers intertwine with his own, squeezing, grounding him in place. Shane raises his eyes to meet Ilya's.
"No." It's gentle yet firm; a reminder that Ilya can see through his bullshit, a skill he has somehow always possessed. Shane opens his mouth for a futile retort but Ilya tightens his grip on Shane's hand again. He doesn't let go.
"They've been saying things, calling me things."
