Summary
For a moment, Knuckles was a child in the arena again, watching his spurs melt into his claws, and horrified at losing them forever. He jerked upright and recognized familiar blankets and the merry frame of a bed shaped like a red truck. With this awareness came the memory that this was only temporary, his spurs would go back to normal eventually. But then came a new horror. He was at House Wachowski and he was changing.

“Did you two… know about this?”
“Know about what?” Knuckles and Sonic said at the same time but in very different tones.
“About the whole…” Tom lowered his voice and stooped, which only succeeded in drawing more attention to him. “Longclaw was… killed by echidnas?”
There was a long moment where they all just looked at one another. Tails looked confused. Sonic looked a mix of distressed and guilty. Tom and Maddie looked like they were expecting shock. Finding none, Tom’s face shifted to outrage. “Wait, you knew?!”
Knuckles started at his tone. “You didn't?!”

Summary
Maddie reached for the grape tray. She’d barely pulled her hand away before a tiny red fist darted out of the nearby blanket pile and grabbed a handful. Shoving the grape in her mouth didn’t do much to stifle her laughter.
There were so many things that were a mystery about their little guest. How old he was. Where he was from. What had happened to his family. What had happened to him. Heck, they still didn’t know his name. But she knew he loved grapes.

“Our garden was badly damaged in that storm last week,” the rabbit said.
Knuckles gave a jerky nod as if he knew what she was talking about. Or why she was telling him this.
“I’ve tried some repairs myself but it’s a lot of work and it’s only Cream and me, you see.” He did not see. He nodded like he did, because he did not want to upset the well-dressed lady with the little daughter. “You said you were looking for work?”
Oh. He realized suddenly: she was asking if he would work for her.

Summary
“Man, Tails, I love you! Never change.”
Knuckles frowned. Sonic was laughing, but ‘never change’ seemed to be a compliment. Tails, at least, didn’t seem offended. He beamed with pleasure, his tails twitching.
Knuckles was no closer to uncovering what ‘love’ meant. He had his theories, but just in case he was wrong, Knuckles would not use it himself.

Summary
Every time Knuckles forgot an echidna word, that word was gone forever. There were already so many that had been lost to time. He’d only been a small child when his tribe was killed. He’d been fluent in his native tongue, but there were many big, fancy words he never learned. All his teachers had died, taking half his language with them. Now he lay awake in his bed at House Wachowski and felt the weight of his slowly eroding childhood vocabulary.
He’d lost ‘thread’.

There was a pause and then the Pretzel Woman leaned back. “Knuckles,” She dropped his name like a stone. “Is this injury weeks old?”

Summary
Tails had never had someone to lose before now. When the ambulance doors closed and both his boisterous brothers were silent, he suddenly felt acutely aware that they knew what it was like. So Tails thought he should say something.
“I should’ve just kept my mouth shut,” Tails said softly.
Knuckles whirled on him so fast, Tails flinched.
“You are not at fault!”

Summary
Tails looked up at his security monitors and saw Little Knux peeking out of the attic hatch. The tiny echidna lingered for a moment. The automatic night lights caught his movement and flicked on. With the hall illuminated, Little Knux headed down the stairs.
After a swig of coffee, Tails went back to his coding.
A moment later another alarm beeped at him. That was for the front door. Little Knux was peering outside with the same trepidation as when he’d peered out of the attic hatch. The security light over the door flicked on and he marched right out.
In a moment Tails was out of his chair and snatching a weapon off the wall.

Summary
“Where am I?” The strange little creature croaked.
“Oh my God, I knew it!” Tom gasped. "It's an alien!"
The alien blinked hard and opened his eyes wide once more.
There was an explosion and suddenly Maddie was flat on her ass. The alien shot past her like a bullet. He hit the ground and skidded across the floor before he lost his balance. He threw out his arms to catch himself, except he only had the one now. He yelped as he toppled over and fell right onto its injured arm.
They all gasped. Before Maddie could think of how much that would hurt, the alien shrieked.

Summary
Apparently the thing that had taken control of Knuckles was supposed to be some kind of evil demi-god who the echidnas occasionally whipped out like a superweapon to save their butts. Why they hadn’t called on it when they were nearly extinct was unclear. They hadn’t summoned the Enerjak since they lost the Master Emerald. Which was especially weird considering:
The Enerjak was drawn to powerful things like moths to bright lights. It knew where the Master Emerald was and it was coming for it. But like… kind of slowly. It didn't have a ton of purpose, this Enerjak. It got sidetracked destroying things and crushing G.U.N.’s tanks like empty soda cans. Which might have been almost cool if it wasn't… y’know, wearing his brother like its personal skin suit.

Tom felt like this was an understatement but maybe that was just his broken ribs talking. “Okay, but how did we get from there to me being in the hospital?”
Sonic threw out his hands. “I don’t know! One second Knuckles was yelling and the next, the fists were flying and so were you!"
He looked away from Tom, blinking rapidly. “Then he just... left... Like we didn’t mean anything.”

Knuckles dashed through the golden ring just before it closed. With a tuck and a roll he came up on his feet, spear at the ready. There were two gasps and he found himself before the towering owl and her apprentice.
“Sonic–” Longclaw made to grab her charge, but he vanished from her side.
“Don’t hurt her!” In a blur, Sonic was in front of the echidna, arms spread out.
“Sonic, no!" Panic struck her. It was happening again! She couldn’t allow this echidna to harm her or Sonic!

Knuckles stared at him as the doctor set the blood down and picked up a second bowl. “You’re mad.”
Finitevus shrugged. “I told you…” He dragged his fingers through the bowl and raised his hand, his glove covered in black ash. “I ruined myself.” He ran the soot over Knuckles’ chest, blacking out the crescent of white fur. “And now it’s your turn.”

Summary
When Knuckles first woke, he thought he was having a nightmare. He was the last of his kind. All his family, tribe, species were dead. Their rotted corpses lay strewn out as far as the eye could see. He’d squeezed his eyes shut and prayed he could wake up from this horrible dream.
Wade found him. He hugged Knuckles and told him everything would be okay now. The nightmare was over.
Knuckles believed him so he opened his eyes. But the nightmare wasn’t over. It was just real-life now.

Prison World? So that was where he was. Knuckles unleashed his second-best phrase: “I do not know.”

The more Sonic thought about it, the more angry he felt. He hardly ever got Actually Angry but here it was. This just wasn’t fair. It wasn’t nice. It shouldn’t have happened! Knuckles was supposed to be safe here!
“Yes,” Knuckles said, determined to keep misreading the room. “I did not provoke the insects to sting!”
“Dude,” Sonic turned to Knuckles, exasperated. “They’re not bee stings! They’re BBs–tiny baby bullets. You got shot!”

Every time Knuckles went into battle, was trapped, attacked, or betrayed, faced starvation or pain or hatred, he always reminded himself that if he was killed then at least he would rejoin his tribe on the great battleground in the sky. But still, he soldiered on. He was the last of his people, who would find the Master Emerald if not him? So no matter what the universe threw at him--thirst, hunger, or this forsaken desert--he would pick himself up and keep going.
