"What the fuck, Bev?" he asks in a harsh whisper. Beverly sighs, heaving Richie up higher against her as he begins to slip.
"I know. I know!" she says. "I just didn't know where else to take him! I can't bring him home like this. And you know my dad will freak if I bring a boy home. Especially like this."
Like this is drunker than Eddie's ever seen anyone, let alone Richie. He can smell the alcohol seeping out of Richie's pores, something sickly sweet punctuated by the lingering scent of cigarette smoke wafting off both of them. Eddie wrinkles his nose against it, his mouth twisting sourly the closer he nears the two of them.

Beverly stands up, wiping the dirt that’s stuck to the sweat of her legs. She looks at the boys with her hands on her hips and one eyebrow raised. “Look it’s either we go to the beach or we all sit around undergroud waiting for the sun to set and I really, really don’t want to waste a summer day being hot and miserable when we could be eating ice cream on a pier.”
It’s silent in the clubhouse, nothing but the buzz of the insects simmering under the sun. Eddie can feel the heat of Bev’s stare on his face just as burning as if he were under the open sky. He flops backwards on the hammock and sighs, resigned to his fate.
“Fine. Fine! We’ll go to the beach.”
The other Losers sigh in relief and maybe a bit of joy at the thought of some reprieve from the heat. Eddie feels a hand tapping at his knee and he looks down at Richie’s smiling face.
“Don’t worry Eds. If a jellyfish stings you, I can just pee on you. Gets the sting right out.”
Eddie’s groan isn’t loud enough to drown out Richie’s laughing.

Eddie's tone was gentle. Richie’s thought fell on Ben, who was a less stressful topic of thinking than Eddie himself, but who often found himself in that same slightly agitated but happy tone.
Ben had invited Bev to live with him even before they left Derry. Richie had seen and heard them, because Losers don't hide anything from other Losers. In theory.
In practice, while watching them locked in a kiss, all red-faced from alcohol and the rush of love as they talked about how wonderful it would be to live together, share space, wake up every morning in each other's arms, Richie had felt that familiar nausea he was having now. That feeling of his stomach being thrown into a blender and surgically packed back into his belly as best as it was manageable. And he hadn't said anything then, just as he wasn't saying anything now.
//: Richie never expected to reach the Happily Ever After. He's not exactly sure how to have anything to do with it.

Richie had a small skill, one he didn’t think was particularly impressive or helpful unless he witnesses a crime or switches careers to the car industry. Because that’s what he’s good at. Cars. To be specific, he’s good at recognizing cars. He can see a glimpse of a dashboard or the seats and almost always guess the make, model and year within 2 tries. It was a fun party trick, but that’s all Richie thought of it. Eddie, however, thinks it’s incredibly sexy. Seeing Richie identify what car he’s driving for work that week based on a selfie with only the headrest and half the door in frame is frankly…hot. There’s no other way he can describe it.
5 times Eddie panics over finding Richie's talent hot, and the 1 time he finally tells him.

For her to grin after insisting he take his shoes off and "clean up right away, mister," like Mrs. Hanlon might.
No, Eddie's Ma would reel back as if electrocuted by the sight of him, then rush forward, smothering him instantly, reminding him of every one of his fears, blaming his messy state on his friends and pelting him with questions.
She'd probably put him under house arrest after taking him to their family doctor, Dr. Jacob, whom he visited often enough to be on a first name basis with. She would do all that and more and Eddie would let her, because he was a coward, because he was weak, because he hated how cold she got with him when he refused to listen to her. Eddie would let her because a small part of him would think what if she's right even when he knew it was all just bullshit, and that torturous phrase would stick and wheedle its way into his brain like the very parasites he'd spent all afternoon trying to avoid.

The world doesn’t give you a manual on what to do when you see your best friend floating eight feet up in the air.
They don’t tell you anything about the sinking feeling in your belly, or the elephant sitting on top of your chest, or the cry that won’t break out of your throat. They don’t tell you that it doesn’t matter how much you know about fear, however many years you’ve spent treating it as an old friend; you’ll see your best friend in a trance, dying, and you’ll wonder if the human body was meant to feel this much fear all at once.
Eddie doesn’t know how to be brave, or maybe he’s just forgotten, but it’s little difference. Eddie doesn’t know how any of this works. Eddie can’t make something out of nothing– but maybe this isn’t nothing.
