He looks between her and the house across the street, hands fidgeting with the paper he holds. “There oughta be another option. You shouldn’t –” He cuts himself off, but Ellie knows what he was gonna say. Years of distance don’t mean that she doesn’t still know him as well as she used to.

She hasn’t said a word since they walked away from that burning building at the resort, has barely let out more than a whimper even though he knows she’s gotta be in just as much, if not more pain than him. Joel can tell by the way she’s walking that her ribs are hurting, by the way her gaze is unfocused that she’s probably got a concussion.
But she just keeps trudging along behind Joel, stepping where he steps, letting him guide her around fallen trees and boulders.
All without a sound.

And Rooster pauses because he kind of has a strong point.
“Just a week?” Rooster asks.
“Just a week,” Hangman confirms.
Rooster breathes out, and Hangman tacks on a, “Please?” with that stupid, sweet-talking smile. And Rooster decides that maybe a pool and a Texan sun is worth acting like he’s dating Jake Seresin in the shade.
