The customer hums, perhaps in approval, perhaps not. Either way, Tommy knows what comes next. The keeper will wrench back the cloth that covers his cage, and whatever rich asshole that's standing on the other side will gape and gawk and take a few large steps back. The light will hurt his eyes, and his chains will rattle when he shifts against the back wall, and the keeper will try to get the customer to purchase him. The customer will look at him with only disgust.
The curtain will close. He will be alone again.
In the beginning Tommy would hiss and gnash his teeth like a wild beast. His fists would slam against the metal bars and he would howl, and all those cowards would go running. It was so satisfying, watching their faces curl with fear as they turned and ran.
Now there isn’t enough room to even wiggle around the cuffs and straps that press into him. His own cocoon of metal and leather, just a whim away from strangling him if someone sees fit.

Tommy tilts his head, scrunching his eyes tight as he buries his nose in the collar of Wilbur’s sweater. Cheek squished against Wilbur’s collarbone, Tommy exhales calmly and sleeps on. Wilbur watches on with adoration, wrapping an arm around the kid and holding him close.
“A total nuisance,” he repeats.

Phil loved each and every one of his children, regardless of whether or not they were a hybrid. Wilbur was no different to this love. He fit right in, and Phil loved him the same as he loved his other two sons. He fit in perfectly and understood them all so well, which is why it ate Phil up so much that he couldn’t say the same back.
Alternatively: Wilbur's upset, SBI doesn't understand humans, gets reality check, and then decides their idea is better than the recommended idea. They're right. It is a better idea.

Wilbur jumped back, barely containing a yelp, Techno taking a small step towards Phil, who was standing staring at the sight in front of them.
A small boy, with fluffy golden curls, bundled in one of the blankets Phil had insisted they keep in the back for emergencies.
And yet, even under the pools of the blanket the boy was swimming under, it wasn’t enough to hide what Phil had latched onto.
Small wings, covered in beautiful, snow-white feathers sprouted from the boy’s back.

Summary
He's fucked up and he didn't even get time to think of anything.
Before he can let his panic rise, he sees movement at the corner of his eye. Hands getting too close to his neck.
Instinctively, Tommy smacks the hand away and clutches at his chest where the emerald necklace still sits, hidden under his shirt but it's likely the pirate saw the golden chain around his neck.
Tommy doesn't care if the pirate is, well, a pirate. Who killed an entire group of men. There is no way he's touching Tommy's necklace. The boy would rather die. Or bite. Either way is fine by him.
Tommy turns away, snarling at the man like an animal. It usually wards people off and most back away or run. But this man only looks surprised for a second before he huffs and his expression drops into a much softer look.
Tommy didn't expect that either.
But instead of doing anything Tommy expected, such as get angry at Tommy, ask where the gold was or try and steal Tommy's necklace again. The man reaches for his own neck where he pulls out a golden chain.
With an emerald at the end.

Tommy blinks faster at tears. He opens his mouth but his breath hitches. He just needs to say something, anything.
Let out something and keep going. They'll know his voice, they'll know the second he speaks. He just needs to do it.
The knife is raised and Tommy shuts his eyes and pulls all the strength in him into this one act.
"WILBY WAIT!!" He manages to scream, his voice echoes off the walls of the warehouse and it's silent. A beat or two passes and Tommy opens his eyes to see the end of the blade only an inch from his face. Basically stroking his eye.
It's pulled away quickly and the trio look stunned into silence.

Tommy was miles from home, bloody and panting, stumbling through the dirty streets as he did his best to cover his tracks. There was no doubt in his mind that Dream would be after him, and this time, he wouldn’t take so long to kill him.
Tommy couldn’t do this anymore. He wished the heroes had killed him the moment they first caught him. Even now, having escaped, he wanted to die. He just didn’t want to be alone as he did it.
But he had nothing and no one. He was alone.
His exhausted mind drifted to the only people he deemed important enough to want to be close to.
He wanted to die. Siren, the Blade, and the Angel of Death wanted to kill him. It was a match made in heaven.

That was what led him to the great idea of adventuring into the woods during lunch time to fight a bear. It seemed like as good an idea as any to discover his amazing power. He didn't expect to be thrown ten years into the future or to find his family different from how he remembered.
