“Yeah, I know you’re tough, Vic, but-” and something breaks on his face, something raw and open and pained comes through, and he spreads his hands wide, cigarette smoldering between his fingers. “You could get hurt, Vic. Or killed.”

“I fucking do.” Harry smacks his hand flat on the table, knocking over a bottle, which falls, noisily. Talk stops - the guitar misses a beat - and Harry flushes, and picks it back up, setting it exaggeratedly on the table.
“Why?” Jean says casually, once talk in the room returns to normal. His heart is pounding. “Why do you care so much?”
For some reason, Harry flushes even more. “I hate training new partners,” he says. -

After Kim’s permanent transfer six months prior, Satellite-Officer Vicquemare became increasingly bitter and volatile around Harry, who always sought out the Lieutenant for second opinions during their cases, which gnawed at Jean’s sanity.
The screaming matches were nothing new for them. Some people would have even said that anything too quiet was suspicious, but since his amnesia, Harry didn’t fight back, just apologized, stayed silent and looked at his shoes. The kicked puppy routine made Jean go nuclear for a myriad of unpleasant reasons. The main being that anyone witnessing these exchanges would instantly feel sorry for Harry, as if his amnesia absolved him of all the sins past and future, as if he was not the catalyst responsible for this dynamic.
It lasted three more miserable months before an opportunity arose. And when it did, Jean asked Pryce immediately for the roles to be shuffled : that Kitsuragi officially be paired with Du Bois - he’s already doing all of his work with him anyways - and Vicquemare joining McCoy - Satellite-Officer Simon just went on indefinite sick leave didn’t he? I can take over.

Your hand is shaking badly and Kitsuragi reaches out and grabs your wrist to steady it, the warmth smooth leather of his gloves on your bare wrist where your sleeve’s pulled up. You draw in a sharp breath and he looks at you and you can see from the sharpening of his eyes that he’s figured it out. -

Aldo has never really been one to think much about penance.
“We honor God in a multitude of ways,” he’d told Thomas once. “I agree that discomfort is useful. We learn to turn away from our sins and commit to do better. I don't understand what mutilating yourself in His name is meant to accomplish. We were not put in this world to suffer, Thomas."
Thomas had been quiet for a long time. "It is a different thing, though," he'd said finally. "You will agree on that much at least. Self-harm is a sin. Self-flagellation has a place in doctrine."
Aldo had winced. "Next thing you'll tell me is you've joined Opus Dei. You don’t think confession is enough? Prayer?”
“I think mortification of the flesh has its place,” he’d said absently, eyes faraway.
“Does it serve a purpose, though, apart from hurting you? Does senseless pain really bring you any closer to Him?”
Thomas had barely flinched. Aldo had felt possessed by the urge to grab his jaw and direct him forward, look at me, look!
“We must repent, Aldo,” he’d said simply. "By whatever means necessary."
He’s always thought Thomas did enough repentance as it was for the two of them. He thinks he understands better now.

One would think moving brought him pain, and Aldo has never seen eyebags deeper and darker than the ones on Tedesco's worn face.
