But Steve managed to knock him out. His shield slamming into the attacker’s gut, the tactical gear offering no real protection. Once he was down, Steve pulled off the mask and goggles, revealing sharp, inhuman teeth. That was all the confirmation he needed. This Thing was a demon.
A bloodthirsty, man-eating beast had nearly taken him out.
Steve was about to finish the job, to put the demon out of its misery. But then he noticed something… strange.
The demon had deep, dark eye bags sagging beneath its eyes, heavy with exhaustion. Its lips were dry and chapped, small cuts scattered across the bottom one. A few days’s worth of stubble shadowed its jaw, and its dark hair was long, greasy, and unkempt. Aside from the beads of sweat sliding down its forehead, its skin looked dry, dirty, and neglected. Overall, the demon looked like it hadn’t cared for itself in months.
Something about the sight broke Steve’s heart. Why? He couldn’t even say. He despised demons as much as the next guy, maybe even more. But this? This was cruel. And if there was one thing Steve Rogers knew how to recognize, it was injustice. And this was definitely it.
