Summary
Written for Whumptober 2024, in collaboration with WhiteCatArts. Link to accompanying art in Notes.
He traces his palm and thinks of how his limbs have become as if lances and his hands are no more. He touches his shoulder blade, searching for the leathery tear of wings and the spikes along his spine, and wonders if any of those bards and poets, or holy men understand what it is to be an Eikon. His body is not his own, but a vessel for some being ancient and powerful. Bahamut tears at his mind, and at his limbs, sinew and bone and muscle shifts, morphs, turning him into a beast.

“With clipped wings?” Joshua snarled.

Dion knew it would fix nothing, that the damage from his father was a slowly festering wound, but Joshua tasted like anger and pain and Dion drank it in because this was his Joshua, his Phoenix.
In a kinder world, Joshua would have always been his. But Greagor… Greagor was not always kind and merciful. Sometimes she was as sharp as Bahamut’s talons against unsuspecting flesh. Dion learned that the first time Joshua came to his rooms wearing his bruises like a queen wore her jewels.
“Make me forget, Dion. Please.”
(Or: Joshua is married off to Sylvestre after Rosaria loses. But even with the constant threat of death, Dion and Joshua find each other.)

Summary
Everyone that is Someone of Importance knows, if spoken the right words at the right menu at the tavern with a bland name in Kanver, one could get access to The House of Splendors. Dion has heard much and more about this mythical place, where secrets, items and substances of splendorous properties and quality are traded with their own special currency. He never paid much worth to the rumors, although he'd received an invitation to partake a few years back.
But now the first signs of the curse rear their face, and the pain is starting to worsen the weight of the responsibilities he carries on his shoulders. If there's some discrete medicine to keep the pain at bay, it could surely be at that establishment. So one night, when their camp is reasonably near Kanver, he takes a few days off to visit the House.
He doesn't get what he wants. Instead he gets what he needs.

“Should you need anything at all, you need only ask,” Dion said, voice soft. “You know I will do all within my power to help ease your burden.”
Joshua’s tongue flickered against his top lip for just a moment, and Dion couldn’t stop himself from watching his mouth for just a moment longer. “There… there is one thing that I may request, if I were to be so bold…”
Joshua locked eyes with Dion, and before he said a single word Dion knew.
(Or: Dion and Joshua take to the skies on their travels to Twinside… and Bahamut and Phoenix are more than happy to ease the tension between their humans on their own terms. Mostly through fucking.)

Years spent apart due to the control forced over him, Bahamut let’s out what he has contained for over twenty years of spending time with the humans of Valisthea. He learns, he feels, and he expresses himself — Finally!
Terence works to keep the secret he is dating royals while said dragon behaves in a way that causes a battle to brew. The second - in - command must act as a leader, no matter what. Even when the bleeding heart of his lover wishes for his presence, he must press on to keep both safe in the complicated situation they are in.
However, all is well in private. Tension falls away entirely while the two lose themselves to a feeling neither had felt in a long time.
