When the first wave of arrows rained down on them, it didn’t take a genius to guess what was happening, but despite being geniuses- all of them, the Claret Orders didn’t take in fools- when panic sets in, no one has any sense to spare. Lucien was as close to being a god as any person since the Raven Queen had ever come, by his estimation, but he was not a god yet, and as such reacted to setbacks and inconveniences and the possibility of a brutal death as any mortal would.

Bloodhunters bleed- it’s in their name. It’s the nature of their existence. Blood is their curse, their gift, and their weapon. They wield their own vitality and allow it to make them monsters. That is the nature of the beast, and there are… side effects to that beast.
Cree doesn’t experience it as strongly- she never ingested the Hunter’s Bane. Her relationship with blood is tantamount to religion. Blood is hers to mold to use to bind and track, but is also hers to worship. Communion occurs when you give yourself over to blood to speak to the Matron. You cannot truly experience enlightenment without copper on your tongue.
But that comes later.
