Slugcats are clever; very clever indeed. You wouldn’t know that upon first meeting, but it doesn't take a long time spent around one to realize this; they watch, they listen and they follow instructions. One though is bigger, heavier, a bit fatter and a whole lot cleverer than the rest. And Cleverness tends to attract Cleverness, which teaches its cleverness to other clever creatures.
Five Pebbles just didn’t see any of that though.

“Don’t you even TRY it, you dick, I’ll stuff this up your -!”
Gregory paused, staring.
The weird cat-salamander thing that had come up behind him, all blue and pink with the biggest purple eyes Gregory had ever seen, stared back, unblinking. He SWORE he could see it vibrating in place, like the rush of a million sugar highs was rushing through its body all at once. It didn’t seem bothered by the rain, water rolling off its back, and the boy felt suddenly, unfairly jealous at it’s obvious lack of discomfort when here HE was, standing there, shivering and miserable and soaked to the bone.
“What the hell are YOU supposed to be?” He snapped.
It squeaked. Gregory stared into those huge eyes, pupils big enough to see his soul reflected back in them, and balled up the old sock and threw it at the thing before bolting off into the rain.
The sock hit him in the back of the head with a wet splat a second later, and the pitter-patter of little paws followed him back to his box.
OR: Gregory adopts/is adopted by a bunch of Slugcats. The animatronics (and Peepaw Afton) are not prepared.

Summary
the main fic contains most of the story but occasionally ill post some other side stories. expect a lot of gruesome or triggering topics, since this isn’t a very lighthearted au. i do think it will have a good ending at the time of writing this though, so in the end everything will work out probably
just some notable headcanons for the au ;
- grey wind is transmasc
- lttm is chronically ill with the iterator version of a neuromuscular disease. i, the writer, am projecting that onto her lol.
- in this au, slugcats aren’t very sentient. in some of my other works they have been but in mountain king they’ve probably got a somewhat higher intelligence than dogs
- fp and srs are on BAD bad terms. my interpretation of them varies on the au/story but in mountain king fp is bitter and blames all that happened on suns, meanwhile suns still feels guilty but hides it. before fp got the pearl they were on amazing terms so womp womp
- overall story will have heavy motifs of vultures for five pebbles and astronomy for moon. you can probably notice that but hey i like to point it out- Words:

Summary
Five Pebbles is being consumed by his past mistakes. His can festers away, each cycle spreading the malignant Rot inside, and struggle as he may, there is no escape. But a single pearl, stumbled upon by his last citizen, Artificer, in a stroke of pure luck, shows him a way out. A way to free himself from his can, escape the Rot, and maybe find a way to redeem himself for his past. It's as simple as cutting a puppet's strings.
The outside world is dangerous, but with determination and fierce companionship, Pebbles and his group of strange slugcat companions can not only survive, but find a place for themselves in the world, where the new civilizations of slugcat and scavenger rise from the ashes of the ancients. The ghosts of the past can be overcome, and a new future found, but it will require no shortage of bravery, insight, and determination.
Breaking free is just the first step. The real challenge begins after.

It was familiar to how it was back home, or at least it started out that way, but after a little while it pounded down harshly, to the point that despite his experiences with dense rain back home, it was so unfamiliar that he hated it. It screamed not Earth. It screamed not home. Not a scream of simply moving to another country, or even another continent, but another planet entirely.
