She jerks awake, eyes snapping open, wide and nervy on impact. Spoon is reminded, very suddenly, of the fawn his father’s truck clipped last spring – frozen at the line of road and long grass in the blinding white headlights, trapped by nothing but a gaze. It had bled, a red smear off the pavement and onto the dirt. He had seen it from his spot in the passenger seat, anxious behind glass while his dad stood outside and called animal control.
“Jesus fucking Christ,” Ema says, and she’s still but her hands are fists, knuckles pressed into the galaxy fabric. “What the fuck?”
“Napping this early will completely ruin your sleep schedule,” he tells her, evenly, and pretends not to notice when she starts to breathe again.
In which the rumors about Ema’s family aren't all made up, the Spindell Spot has a very comfortable couch, and Spoon gets more and more worried about his new friends by the day.

At first glance, Nick thought it was Chris. His hair was grown out and he wore a too-big graphic t-shirt that would fit into his closet perfectly. Or at least it would've a year ago.
But there was the chain and the rings and that wide-eyed conflicted look that told him who he was really looking at. The fact that there was even a moment of doubt scared him a bit, though.

The momentum of her fall sends him thudding against a tree, and his eyes slam shut as he grits his teeth against the white hot pain that flares in his side.
When he opens his eyes, she’s facedown in the snow, still and silent, hands still at her sides making it clear that she didn’t even try to catch herself.
It speaks of so much trauma, so much unresponsiveness, that he feels tears sting his eyes at the sheer scale of what’s happened to her, of how small and useless he is to fix any of it, of how much he’s let her be hurt by his own failure to protect her.
But there’s no time for his own self-loathing.
She needs him, insufficient as he is.
