“The cornflowers sell especially well,” Gaius says.
Or: Merlin, on his trips to find herbs for Gaius, starts bringing home flowers. It doesn’t take long until the townspeople of Camelot start asking for specific flowers, and for Merlin to start taking orders.

Summary
Merlin isn’t overly surprised when he goes blind.
Something was always going to happen. At one point he might’ve thought destiny wouldn’t let it, but if destiny gave half a shit how hard it was to appease then Merlin wouldn’t wake up with more old pains and aches than Gaius every morning. He wouldn’t have to cover his scars up with a glamour full time, despite keeping most of his skin covered. No, Merlin stopped expecting slack about the time he first killed in the name of Albion and got whipped for his incompetence the next day.
Destiny will not accept blindness as an excuse for failure, so Merlin can’t afford to, either. His purpose remains. Arthur still needs protection. This changes nothing.

To sit on the throne was a great responsibility.
And sometimes, he who sat upon it wished for nothing more than to step down for one day. To give up control, and breathe—finally, breathe. To feel the weight and stress lifted off his shoulders as he relinquished control unto another.

Arthur's eyes betray nothing as he takes his seat at the head of his dining table and gestures for Gwaine to join him at his right side. Gwaine settles, and sighs, and says after another swallow of too-sweet wine, "And I hope that his and mine lasts just a little longer."
Gwaine is the villain in this part of the story. He accepted that a long time ago.

While Merlin bemoans the changing of the seasons because of the cold, Arthur dreads it because of a peculiar tradition in Camelot. But with Merlin around, Arthur wonders if he might be able to avoid the troublesome situation altogether.
That is if he could keep track of his manservant.
It's only when Merlin seems to vanish from his side that Arthur begins to notice that Merlin treats him differently than most everyone else in Camelot.
And that bothers him. More than it should.
