Summary
Most people didn't manifest the mark of their soulmate right away. Oh, sure, it happened – it had happened with Lucifer, before anyone had known what a soulmate even was, before anyone had realised such a thing was possible for angels – but it was pretty uncommon.
And it was absolutely possible for it to break – or fade. It was pretty unlikely on Earth, hardly ever happened during the span of a regular human life – but when the souls in question were immortal? Yeah, sometimes things changed. Relationships grew distant, love degraded. Once you'd experienced the bond fading – or worse, breaking? – no, most people were a little wary about throwing themselves into a new relationship.

Lucifer has experienced having a soulmate. Alastor has never been interested in the concept. Something is dreadfully wrong, because Lucifer is seeing shadows move out of the corner of his eye - and Alastor's claws are glowing golden.

He is NOT going to be defeated by a fucking HOTEL ROOM and the desperate housewife from HELL.

As the elevator doors opened with a ding, people started pushing, and soon Wei Wuxian found himself pressed between the inner wall and Lan Zhan’s arm. Ugh. You could feel even through the layers of fabric that he was one of those annoying people who worked out regularly, not because of a doctor’s orders, or because they enjoyed it, but because it was good for you.
Oh, god, Lan Zhan said. Alright, don’t panic. Deep breaths. You can do this.
A Cherry Magic AU, where Wei Wuxian on his 30th birthday finds himself in a crowded elevator next to Lan Zhan, and soon realizes two things:
1. that there seems to be some truth to that ridiculous urban legend about 30-year-old virgins being able to hear the thoughts of other people as soon as they touch.
2. that Lan Zhan works out, AND that he, despite his stoic exterior, thinks that Wei Wuxian smells good and has an adorable bed-head, along with some other not-so PG-13 fantasies and thoughts.
And no, Wei Wuxian has no idea what to do with this information.

And what a fun little kick to the gut that is, the realization that not only had he been played by all sides, but he's also being tossed aside like trash now that his use had run its course.
It’s not that Childe doesn’t get it. He’s a Harbinger. He knows first-hand what it means to do his duty, to put the mission first and his personal feelings far, far away, preferably locked up in a box, where it wouldn’t interfere with his job. He knows what it’s like working with vipers, to scheme and plot and lie in wait for the opportune moment to stab his opponent in the back.
But this time, this time Childe can’t help but feel a little (a lot) gutted.
Stupid. He’s gotten himself stupidly attached.

As the disk of orange dipped below the Liyuan waters and the twilight sky remained illuminated by dusky remnants of what had been, Zhongli’s golden-edged features took on a radiance of their own. It wasn’t the lights playing tricks on him when Childe saw the man’s eyes gleam, and he craved to know what that meant.
“Perhaps I give you too much credit.” He was smiling, now, and Childe’s breath caught in his throat. That was certainly new. “Maybe you do not listen as much as I thought you do.”
Childe processes just how different Rex Lapis, God of Contracts, and Zhongli, Wangsheng Funeral Consultant, really are.
They coincide at the worst of times, and it does some truly awful things to his heart.
