He chuckles and it's a bitter thing. Still doesn't sound right either. He's tried and failed to replicate her laugh, just to hear it again.
"That's why I'm watching this one instead. First and last one before I hit the road. Leave Night City behind me forever," he whispers, the sun starting to peek over the horizon. "You're right though, V. It's beautiful." A pause. "But it's got nothing on you."

Rage surged like wildfire inside her. Judy rushed forward, flushed with ire, and yanked V’s arm. They stared directly at each other, but the words she was going to say died on her tongue. V’s eyes were bright, lit silver in the dark. Yet what lay within was all ice – cold and hard with disdain. V had never looked at her like that before. Something clicked in Judy’s head; a recognition of what this truly was.
“You’re that engram in her head. The construct.” She recoiled, stepping several steps backward. V – no – the thing wearing her face smiled.

Judy hummed a yes. “He was real worried about you.” A noise of annoyance was scoffed out from near the wall and Johnny was there, face turned towards the window. For once he was without his vest and glasses. He glanced over and caught V’s look, rolling his eyes.
“I wouldn’t be worried if you learned how to fucking drive,” he snapped. “You do that to my Porsche and the deals off.”
“Love you too, Johnny,” V said and he snorted.

They pause with the hatchling's name on the tip of their tongue. The hatchling could just as easily be dead, too. They didn't know what awaited them at the Eye; the place itself might have simply killed them, or the Vessel might have malfunctioned from millennia of disuse and dropped them into empty space, a slow death by suffocation as their oxygen ran out. Or they might not have even made it to the Vessel at all. One mistake and they might be nothing but little bits and bobs shredded up somewhere in the bowels of Dark Bramble, lost forever, left behind to burn up with the rest of them.
Gabbro turns their head up to the sky, which is now almost too bright to look at.
"Nah," they say, to no one in particular. "They made it. It's a better story if they made it."

And that should have been the seal on the marshmallow tin, except Gabbro is Gabbro, and their brain never does know when to quit probing at thought experiments: “Hang on,” they add, straightening up from their slouch, “that’s a fallacy, bud. That logic only makes sense if you visited me on your real first flight—otherwise, no dice.”
To which Shale shoots back, with the utter contempt of someone who is still, ultimately, a teen: “Yeah, and? You were my first stop, idiot.” And before Gabbro can even react— “And I was planning on visiting even before the statue opened its eyes at me, so don’t go using that as another loophole.”
For a precious moment, Gabbro is speechless.

Thomas answered with a wry smile of his own. “I wouldn’t have suggested playing if we were. I’ve heard from others who’ve challenged you. Rinaldo is still looking to replace his best dagger.”
Billie grinned at that. It was a fine dagger - she had it sheathed in her boot right now. “Probably a good choice. I’ve been eyeing that pistol of yours.”
Thomas wordlessly flipped the end of his coat over to shield his holster from her view. Billie laughed and gathered the cards for another deal.

Daud had found him bleeding out in Darrellson Street after a deal gone wrong. “That’s what you get,” Daud had said, “for trying to swindle the Sixways Gang.” Rulfio had given him the finger and told him to go suck off a hagfish. Daud liked him immediately.
His brother came next. Four years younger, far less foolhardy. Rinaldo took to his share of Daud’s powers like a rat to rotting flesh. He now oversees the men’s occult training, Rulfio handles weaponry.
And the rest is history.)
